If you missed this, John Kasich put a provision into the Ohio budget that all Ohio teachers who need to renew their teaching licenses will have to do a high school-style internship with a local business in order to renew their license. The Governor has decided that a 20 year teaching veteran shouldn’t be allowed to be a teacher anymore unless they shadow a factory worker, barista, or accountant for a day. Of course, this is the dumbest thing anyone has seen in a long time.
I have started thinking about how to make this better for teachers. I have some things planned to make sure that this does not take effect. However, if we are unsuccessful and the internship program does go into effect on September 1, 2018, I have a program ready to go and I’d like to tell you about it.
Ervin Educational Consulting, LLC Teacher Internship Program
My company, Ervin Educational Consulting (EEC), will be accepting teachers into its Teacher Internship Program effective September 8, 2018. This will satisfy the State of Ohio’s galactically stupid internship requirement.
EEC Teacher Interns will have a two part day.
Morning: EEC Teacher Interns will arrive at Ghostlight Coffee at 9:00 am on Wayne Avenue in Dayton, Ohio (or thereabouts; I’m going to be very forgiving about punctuality, since this is about three hours later than most teachers arrive on a normal day). EEC Teacher Interns will then be given free lattes, compliments of Ghostlight, the best coffee shop in Southwest Ohio. I’ve already worked this out with Ghostlight ownership (Thanks, Shane!). During this time, teachers will be able to work on their lesson plans and grade papers since they never have the time to do that during a normal day’s work. Or, if they would like, they will be able to strategize with other EEC Teacher Interns on how to best organize against politicians who have no respect for teachers.
Once the morning is over, EEC Teacher Interns will be allowed to go out to eat as if they were normal people with normal jobs.
In the afternoon, EEC Teacher Interns will finish their state-mandated internship requirements by getting a free massage donated by a local business. The internship day will end with a parting gift from Ervin Educational Consulting and a sincere thank you for doing a really hard job every single day.
This is not a joke. I am really doing this. I am asking for business owners from around Ohio to support teachers in this way. Have teachers intern at your businesses by allowing them to catch up on their work and relax. Treat them with the respect and appreciation that is lacking from politicians like John Kasich.

Bob Graham's Workdays
In 1977, state legislator and relatively unknown gubernatorial candidate, Bob Graham, created campaign publicity by undertaking a series of 100 "workdays." Graham announced he would experience the lives of ordinary Floridians firsthand by working their jobs. Although the model for this innovative strategy was Lawton Chiles' walk across the state during his successful 1970 campaign for the US Senate, the initial idea for a workday was not Graham's.
In 1974, during a committee meeting, Graham began complaining at the poor level of the civic awareness of Florida's students. A frustrated high school teacher, Sue Reilly, dared the young legislator to teach a class himself for one day. He agreed, thinking it would never happen. But Reilly set up for him to teach after Labor Day at Carol City High School in Miami Lakes, Graham's hometown. Publicly committed, Graham taught the class. In 1977, Graham would count the teaching stint as his first workday.
Throughout 1977 and 1978, Graham worked all sorts of jobs from lobster fisher, mullet gutter, shrimper, and dive boat operator to short order cook, bellhop, social worker, and plumber. He even spent a night riding with the Tallahassee Police Department, which included the discovery and investigation of a near-fatal shooting. He also spent two days as a temporary worker, including applying for food stamps. His final job before the 1978 election was as a housewife.

Of course, the workdays made for good television and garnered ample newspaper coverage as well. Graham followed a couple of rules in order to stay legitimate in the eyes of voters. He worked the entire shift. He only allowed the press to be present for a part of that shift. And he did all aspects of the job. After winning the election, Graham kept up the workdays throughout his terms as governor and US Senator and during his brief presidential candidacy in 2003. He has worked 921 jobs in over 109 cities and five states.

I believe that those workdays gave Graham a real perspective on the lives on a wide range of people and how their jobs affected their lives. And I think they were one of the things that made Graham a great governor and senator.
