Watergate took a couple of years to unravel because the people who were doing all the shit were actually good at it (except for the Watergate burglars themselves, who were not - and they're the ones who first got caught). But the various money launderers and bag men were very good at covering their tracks, and had it not been for Deep Throat and eventually John Dean 'fessing up and Butterfield revealing the taping system, they might have got away with it. Most of those guys were able to lie credibly and keep their lies straight.
This bunch, though... 
The trick to effective lying is to tell lies that are at least somewhat credible in the first place, and then keep them consistent. If you just pull wild stories out of your ass you will never be a great criminal mastermind.
