But it costs money to obtain, which is a barrier for many voters, and so should not be a requirement.

And I'm sure they're disproportionally wealthier than the rest of the Americans.

If I had $160 to throw around, I'd get a passport. But I use my drivers license for ID and birth certificate to prove citizenship. I'd also get a passport if international travel were on my radar in the near future.

to vote. Not many passports in people's hands in some parts of the country. A lot of middle-class Republicans wouldn't even think about venturing into another country. Scares them to death.

On the other hand, my wife and I are going to renew our now-expired passports shortly. Minnesota's legislature is being a dick about making our driver's licences Real ID compatible, and starting in 2018, we may need passports to fly.

Identification typically has to include a current address (to confirm you are in the correct voting precinct). Passports don't.
