I'm not so sure we should worry overmuch about civil war. When push comes to shove, most of the talk about what trouble people are in is just that. Even if worried about uncertain futures, most people feel they are doing anywhere from well enough to very good and have way too much to lose to risk ending up refugeeing down a highway with what they can carry on their backs.

Plus, imagining it would ever come to worst, which I doubt, almost no one is at all independent for daily needs any more. Governments, local, state, and federal, could bring whole populations to their knees in short order just by cutting off communications and/or electricity or water. Imagine the southwest with no electricity in summer or most sections of the country the same in February. Most people couldn't even get a message to family, much less answer a call to rebellion, if communications were cut. Most don't even have paper maps for even their area of their own state any more.

We all have to agree and worry about about the "unifying" effect of a terrorist strike or some such. But political success from that would require the gang that clearly still hasn't figured out which end of the gun the bullets come out of to stop shooting themselves long enough to handle it competently. Failure in that would mean a sure end to their support.
