They lied because their President wanted them to lie.

When General Flynn lied to Mike Pence and others that he had not talked with the Russians, Donald Trump knew. Flynn lied because that is required to work for Donald Trump. It's a show of loyalty to show that you are ready to lie for your boss.

When Jeff Sessions lied under oath before a Senate Committee, he knew better. He had been a Chair of a Senate Committee. He knows about lying and perjury. So why did he lie? Because he knew that Donald Trump did not want anyone to know that he and his campaign were meeting the Russians in secret. Donald Trump did not have to ask him to lie. He knew that was part of his job. It was his loyalty oath to his President.

When KellyAnne Conway and Sean Spicer come before the press to make their pronouncements, they understand that they cannot say anything that might make their boss angry. They understand that lying is part of their job. They have learned to do it well. After a while, it just comes natural.

Sheldon: “And Leonard, even though I don’t have one anymore. I hope you have fun playing with it.” Leonard: “And that’s a lie.” Sheldon: “Yeah, that’s a big fat whopper. I hope it breaks.”
