You can tweet your answer at Jason Chaffetz. I'm sure he will be grateful for the data.

(37,364 posts)I suppose I could drop the insurance and get 21 times as many phone scam calls.

(11,243 posts)21 phones to forget to mute and have ring at unexpected and inappropriate times. 21 screens to break. 21 phones to drop in water. The fun goes on and on. Who needs health care when I could have all that?

(175,749 posts)The minor procedure I'm having Thursday might be 3 or 4. Aside, I have a Nokia android that cost $15 with a two-year contract.
wildeyed
(11,243 posts)So many iPhones to pay for that... We should call him Jason "Let them eat cake" Chaffetz. The guy who has government healthcare AND a government smart phone, so he has no idea what those things cost us little people.
greatauntoftriplets
(175,749 posts)I'll just call Chaffetz someone who doesn't care about the welfare of the people.

(14,449 posts)I did it that way and still spent a bit more on health but it is closer if you include monthly bill.

(5,611 posts)And I am not even including the costs that would cause our expenditures to skyrocket -- hospital stays, multiple cat scans or mris, etc. Chaffetz's comment is idiotic. The same flippant comment could be made about cars and car payments, housing (find a cheaper place to live!), eating cheaper food, etc etc. It is ignorant drivel, and it is a special kind of cruel nastiness that targets the lower middle class and the poor. Fuck Chaffetz.

(11,243 posts)You must not have health insurance due to some personal failing.... From the people who have good government healthcare policies AND free smart phones provided by Uncle Sam
As part of the repeal process, they should agree to repeal their own policies and partake of whatever plan they manage to pass. Be that would change their perspective.

(16,829 posts)Obamacare is too expensive for some of us who aren't poor enough to get a subsidy, but not rich enough to make an extra rent or mortgage sized payment every month. It's an imperfect program, but rolling it back will make things more expensive. More people will die.

(5,043 posts)Do you really need all that human grade food? I hear cat food is almost the same.
What about rent? Couldn't you sleep in your car?
And do you really need to change into clean undies EVERY day? Just turn them inside out and you save on clothes AND laundry.

His entire purpose in life is to destroy the Obama legacy and kill as many of his voters as he can.
I wish the FUCKING people who vote for him would FUCKING realize that.
Do they hate black Obama so much they will die?

There is a real disconnect in their heads, they just dont want to admit it.

(11,243 posts)I would trade my iPhone for a policy that didn't have a $7,000 deductible any day. Sadly, that option is not actually on the table.

(297,533 posts)$7000 deductible ouch!
wildeyed
(11,243 posts)I try to schedule any big scheduled procedures for right after May 1st when our deductible resets so we have the best shot at actually getting something, anything paid for by the policy

(11,243 posts)for a medication or procedure is a huge failure in the 'free market' system they claim to worship too.
If I call the pharmacy and ask how much a prescription is going to cost, they are not ALLOWED to tell me. I have to do it in person. And it could be a whole range of prices, depending on if my insurance covers it (rarely), what the going rate in my state is at that moment, if there is a manufacturers coupon. It's crazy.
Rex
(65,616 posts)That is why I like to make the distinction between 'free' and 'fair' markets. Free markets will always benefit capital and fair markets will always benefit labor. Despite their political parties. Regulations work, proven fact. Unions work, proven fact.
The GOP is about to wholesale deregulate 50 years of progress, they will repackage it as Nocare and pretend you should be thankful to live in a country to get THAT.
wildeyed
(11,243 posts)Fair market is for stuff you need. Schools and healthcare being at the top of my list.... I had an online discussion on one of my wiggy-conservative state representative's FB pages with his supporters about O-care. I explained how I owned a small business and was charged a much higher rate than government and corporate workers with lower levels of productivity for the same policy because small businesses don't have the benefit of collective bargaining. As a result, we get gouged by insurance companies. Other small business owners told me if I didn't like it, get another job.
Up their taxes a single cent and they scream bloody murder, but big business can rob us blind and crickets....

(9,527 posts)hospital, or if you need a specialized surgery/care. I'm lucky in that my insurance is both good and cheap (full disclosure, I work for my health insurer), but even my doctor told me to not change insurers since other insurance companies tend to fight against covering the surgery I had and I was approved for it in less than 8 business hours.
Additionally while it can be cheaper to get an MRI done at a generic MRI scan place, it's also really convenient to have it done at my doctor's office in that I can make one appointment in one place, not have to worry about the results being sent over, etc. It's a conscious decision I make to do that, knowing that it's financially better to choose otherwise. I'm lucky in that in Massachusetts we have a law requiring your insurance company to price out things like MRIs or X-rays at different locations.

(5,611 posts)A person without insurance will go bankrupt. I have gotten into discussions with people who would go bankrupt in minutes if /when they confront a serious health issue but their ignorance on these matters is stunning (which I suppose is exactly how they get away with this shit as far as gutting healthcare is concerned)

(22,651 posts)Insurance I've never had to use. It's always been important to me to have insurance "just in case" of sickness or accident
Bad things like cancer, a broken leg, a car accident cost a FORTUNE in USA to treat- *without insurance* I would be broke.
A cheap phone, a basic $25 a month land line would be fine. discount/cheap 'health care' or no insurance is not fine.

(10,722 posts)plus $23 a month for service. No landline, so its a necessary utility if I want to keep a job.
My health insurance is employer sponsored, at $116 a month or so. Probably I'd be screwed if I had to use it, deductibles and so forth, but I've been pretty fortunate healthwise. Regardless, my phone costs aren't much comparatively. I know people who pay much more for both, and people who pay less.
