This is what the GOP thinks of poor people without access to HC (Bible Justification Warning)!

“Just like Jesus said, ‘The poor will always be with us,’” he said. “There is a group of people that just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves.”

Pressed on that point, Marshall shrugged.

“Just, like, homeless people. … I think just morally, spiritually, socially, [some people] just don’t want health care,” he said. “The Medicaid population, which is [on] a free credit card, as a group, do probably the least preventive medicine and taking care of themselves and eating healthy and exercising. And I’m not judging, I’m just saying socially that’s where they are. So there’s a group of people that even with unlimited access to health care are only going to use the emergency room when their arm is chopped off or when their pneumonia is so bad they get brought [into] the ER.”

There is a group of people that just don't want to show humanity and aren't going to take care of anyone else. Just, like, soulless conservatives...I think just morally, spiritually, socially, you just don't want to exemplify any kind of decency.

The Congressional Republican population, which is a free credit card with perks, as a group, do probably the least medical care for the population and the most for themselves.

And I am not judging... I'm just saying categorically that is where you are. So, you're a group of people with unlimited access to health care who wouldn't help someone even when their arm was chopped off.

and abused Gospel verses about the poor. Jesus was actually quoting an old testament verse from Deuteronomy 15 7-11. His disciples would have known the background of that chapter and understood his rebuke to Judas.

For anyone interested here's the bit from the Bible that Jesus was quoting from:

Generosity to the Poor
7 “If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, 8 but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs. 9 Beware lest there be a wicked thought in your heart, saying, ‘The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,’ and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out to the Lord against you, and it become sin among you. 10 You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. 11 For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’

Many of our Christian neighbors here in the deep south feel their responsibility is to what they see as their community. If children are going hungry in the next town over, that really needs to be that community's responsibility.

When I pointed out once that our county has plenty of sick whose needs were not being met by the people of the county, and shouldn't we...? End of subject. They got tired a long time ago of explaining to liberals what we seem incapable of understanding.

Some are VERY set in their beliefs. I've even been called the 'devil' for quoting Bible verses which prove them, and therefore the ministers they quote, wrong or expose their hypocrisy.

I'm not sure if it's that they get tired of explaining as much as their being tired of us showing them up.

and when examined with open minds their beliefs have far more validity than most are willing to admit. As far as they go, of course.

At least they did at one time, anyway.

These times, when religious doctrine has been twisted to support political partisanship, have to have done great damage to conservative churches. I've read some "whither Christianity" moaning for years, but hopefully it's becoming apparent to more than just some leaders and scholars, and those few percent who've withstood the corruption.

A woman had brought Jesus an alabaster box of precious ointments, but his disciples saw it,they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much and given to the poor.

The Jesus said For ye have the poor always with you,but me you have not always. He was about to be crucified and those ointments were to be used for his funeral.

Jesus was not saying the poor will always be with us therefore it was pointless to help them.He was saying in this case his death was priority. Jesus taught to help the poor in many other places of scripture anyway. Disgraceful that someone would misuse that scripture to justify denying healthcare to poor people.

that's the context and that be obvious to someone who calls themselves a Christian (and IME this story is a common one told during Lent). Sadly though it's easier for some to quote Bible verses taken out of context and with zero understanding of the background story, historical times, why, etc.

so it's possible he doesn't.

IME many people go to church/mass just to show they're 'good christians'. There they pick up snippets of scripture and then use them without any real thought, understanding or knowledge.

... that poor people just don't want to healthy sounds reasonable. That means I get to quit caring because it's their fault. I also don't have to think anymore, so that's good. And it's wrapped in a basterdized bible quote, so I can feel morally great and superior.

Nothing more to do but to take away their healthcare!

Comes from Rev Barber-
http://shareblue.com/heresy-rev-barber-smacks-down-gop-rep-who-quotes-jesus-to-claim-poor-dont-want-health-care/

BARBER: Well, that is a form of heresy. It is a misquoting of Scripture. It is what the so-called religious evangelicals put out there. They actually misquote that Scripture. When Jesus was quoting that as a good Hebrew, and a good Jewish person. Whenever they quoted part of scripture, they meant the whole Scripture. If you go back to Deuteronomy, that Scripture says because the poor will be with you, then you should care for the poor. You should care for the alien. And it was talking to the nation. Jesus, if he did anything, provided free health care, Joy. Everywhere he went, he set up free health clinics.

I know Jesus scolds Judas for judging a woman for pouring oil (perfume?) on him (but wasn't that because he was a thief?), but I can't find this quote in the context of "people will always be poor, so there's nothing we can do about it."

of that Jesus quote.

You're right that Jesus was scolding Judas, and in his saying, "You will always have the poor among you" Jesus was quoting from a main Jewish tenet taught by Moses about helping the poor in Deuteronomy 15 to do so.

Jesus expected others to understand his meaning as it was a familiar quote...it has been used by the right to justify wounding the poor...but they better pray (haha) there is no God because if there is they will be sent straight to hell.

"If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be ... For the Poor will always be with you Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’ (Deuteronomy 15: 7-11)"
