In a Chekist state everything is controlled by the state security apparatus. That means that all businesses, institutions and especially politics come are overseen by the state's security service. So any business contact is a contact with the FSB, as are all contacts with ostensibly social organizations.

The diagram above is shaped by our Western biases. In order to reflect reality, the entire right-hand side of the diagram should be replaced by one circle labeled "State Security" or FSB, with Putin at its center. All those Americans are effectively tied to the FSB.
