Poor people are supposed to be barefoot and dressed in rags. Why are they even living indoors? Hey, the Dalits in India are poor. If you aren't living like one of them you aren't poor; if you have any appliances, let alone a car or a cellphone, you shouldn't ask for help from the government.

Mr. Coffee - $20
Fridge - $200-$300 (used)

Average healthcare plan(family) - $10,000 year

I'm stunned that these scumbags are actually doubling down on this argument. Comparing household appliances (which typically last years) to medical insurance is INSANE.

You can get a working coffee maker for $5 to $10. Microwaves for $30 to $50.

Since the poor are disproportionately renters, they have refrigerators because they come with the fucking apartment!

People have been giving away big screen TVs, the kind that weigh a ton and take 2 people and a dolly to move, or selling them for less than $100.

They have good times and setbacks.

I have a fridge because it came with my apartment. I don't actually own it. And before I was poor, I bought small appliances (horror of horrors!) If I pawned them used, I would get maybe $50 for the lot (microwave, rice cooker, slow cooker, breadmaker, and electric kettle). Where can I get health care for those $50?

And when you have basically nothing, every little thing you do have that makes your life easier increases in value exponentially. My small kitchen appliances have all more than paid for themselves because I cook all my meals at home instead of eating out.

For example, my breadmaker cost $200. Every time I use it, I save $2 a loaf. I use it every week. It paid for itself in 2 years and is still going strong at 5 years. So I'm actually $312 ahead on it. If I pawned it for $10, it would only be five weeks before the cost of now having to buy all my bread ate away at of the profit I made by selling it.

If I make six servings of soup in a $40 slow cooker and the ingredients cost $5, I only have to do that twice before the slow cooker has paid for itself compared with the cost of having 6 meals at a fast food joint at $5 a meal.

Likewise, having the microwave so it is easy to reheat leftovers without dirtying even more pots and pans that I have to wash by hand because I can't afford a dishwasher means that I cook at home more often instead of eating out.

And all of those things mean I eat healthier and am less likely to need health care.

Republicans pay lip service to being frugal and "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" but this is how poor people actually do it. They gather and hang on to the tools that save them money and make their lives easier. The fact that they have them doesn't mean that they aren't poor and struggling. It just means that they aren't destitute.

financial people left CNBC and went to the FOX financial channel, which is nothing. (They sponsored one of the debates and no one could find it.) Before that, Varney already did this FOX financial show, at least it is supposed to be a financial show. It is really a political fake news financial show, bash the left with ludicrous claims. Eric Boling, yuk, is on it now, and an anchor on Fox News. He was kicked off CNBC options show because he was a RW nut. Brenda Buckner too was on the Fox Sat or Sunday, whichever, morning financial show. She died recently.

In fact, they just get bolder with time. Basically, they would be fine if they just turned all of the Dems, poor, & disabled into slaves. There are a lot of good souled rich people...Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, George Soros, many more. The RW rich HATE these people. They have hated Warren Buffet ever since he came out in favor of reinstating the estate tax to the Clinton years. It's about 11$ million for a couple now, the exemption...poor millionaires and billionaires have to pay taxes on their money above that, at least to the extent they can't get rid of it with fancy trusts, RE exchanges, and all of the other hundreds of ways to avoid taxes.

Shame on you people, you want to rob them in their graves. Death tax!

Mar 2017

if you're poor you get assistance. If you're wealthy you don't need it. But if you're in the middle (or even just barely above poverty) you get nothing. I think this is intentional to generate class resentment. People aren't "voting against their interests" (per se). They are angry about paying for a system that provides little benefit to them. Fox News is a cess pit but they didn't make the stink.

52. And all of those appliances may be purchased used on Craigslist for nothing.
Thu Mar 9, 2017, 06:38 PM
Mar 2017

Five years ago, I got a free dishwasher on Craigslist. It was a year old. A person in the neighborhood redid their kitchen and changed all the appliances. Put the old ones on CL for free.

In the past two years (at a new rental), bought a used side-by-side fridge for $75, an over-the-range microwave for $50 and another dishwasher for $75 including installation and delivery.

In general, if you need a new appliance - especially a microwave - check CL. College kids are buying those things and selling them in next-to-new condition all the time. Neighbors have appliances in great shape that the sell when they remodel.

And all kinds of appliances get left at the curb as a free giveaway to anyone with a way to haul it home. Again, check Craigslist.

You can get a brand new coffee maker for $10.

Faux News idiots.
