She plays the accordion, has practiced medicine for 30 years and is fluent in French. Now she's looking to unseat Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz.
Kathryn Allen, a Democrat, announced her 2018 bid this week to run for Utah's 3rd Congressional District a race often overlooked due to its overwhelmingly Republican voter base that virtually guarantees a win for the conservative candidate.
This time, a new dynamic seems to be in play. In just a few days, Allen has raised more than $410,000, mostly from small, out-of-state donations. Money poured in Tuesday after Chaffetz appeared on national television and remarked that "rather than getting that new iPhone," low-income Americans may have to prioritize spending on health care.
He later clarified the remark about the new Republican plan to slim down Obamacare, noting "I didn't say it as smoothly as I possibly could." But the congressman faced an immediate uproar on social media accusing him of being insensitive. At the same time, Allen's donations skyrocketed from the $20,000 that sat in her accounts beforehand while she explored a potential run.
So she decided to officially file as a candidate.

(66,328 posts)...she speaks French.
I'm not saying that like it's a bad thing. But once the howler monkey cage of right wing radio blow hards starts blithering that she speaks French, it's going to torpedo her campaign.
Repubs have been led by their collective noses right into a manure pile marked with a sign stating "French things are bad!" So says the party that gave us 'Freedom Fries'.
It doesn't matter that Chafed Nuts has the second-most punchable face in the Western Hemisphere, after Martin Shkreli. All he has to do is bring up the French thing, and his voting base will brachiate arm-over-arm to the polls to vote against her.

(15,412 posts)I've not decided whether to donate or not. This is a very red state and I usually give money to out of state candidate who have a chance, or to people I know. YMMD
I don't care that she knows French but the accordion? Really?

(13,783 posts)... red areas. In a recent special election to the CT state senate Greg Cava lost by only 11% when he'd lost by 33% in the previous regular election. So we just need to flip 6 more percentage points. This is in a district that hasn't voted democratic since 1891! That is not a typo.
She may not win this time, but we've got to show Repubs they're not safe anywhere. Who knows where a critical mass might be rallied and then turned into a majority!
For this reason I support ItStarts.Today, where all donations are divided equally amonth the 468 Democratic candidates for federal office. Like I said, who knows where a critical mass might blossom?

(17,984 posts)I donated to the Ossoff campaign and wanted to find another place to put my money to work. Although it would be tremendous accomplishment unseating Chapped Ass, I'm not sure it can be done. Chapped Ass has lost a lot of ground recently, but is it enough to flip the electorate?

(1,097 posts)Jon Ossoff continues to lead in polls in the highly competitive Congressional Special Election to replace Tom Price (Trumps appointee as secretary of Health and Human Services). Special Election will be held next month on April 18 and his closest competitor is gaining ground (Republican, former Georgia SOS) so please continue to support Jon Ossoff:

If you were watching the Rachel Maddow show tonight you would have seen a story about Dr. Kathryn Allen. Maddow mentioned that since Chaffetz compared health insurance costs to an iPhone that Dr.Kathys crowdpac page had been getting substantial contributions.
Last I checked the story is also really helping her out. If you get a chance go to her crowdpac page, donate and have fun reading the endorsement. There is a lot of disgust for Chaffetz out there and Dr. Kathy is what we need. Best of luck!
Here is the recent good news from her page:
