The Washington Post published an intricate investigation into White House chief strategist Steve Bannons shady residential history on Saturday, from which one extremely bleak detail stands out in particular, an email sent to Bannon in February 2015 by one of his former Florida landlords that reads, in part, [E]ntire Jacuzzi bathtub seems to have been covered in acid.
Bannons reply was entirely too curt. Im out of town, Bannon wrote, is there any way u can talk with Diane and sort things out ???
The acid reportedly destroyed the tub and the propertys landlords estimated it caused $14,000 worth of damage. They did not return Bannon and ex-wife Diane Clohesys $9,800 security deposit.
No other details about the acid-drenched tub are provided by the Post reporters, leaving us all wondering what the fuck occurred. Some possible explanations:

Covered in acid, WTF?!

(183,007 posts)There is an acid thing in that movie used to get rid of bodies.
Sounds like someone purposely did damage AND really knew what they were doing.

(26,026 posts)to know that murderers occasionally dissolve their victims with various strong acids in the bathtub. It leaves an indelible stain, however, and that has been used in court as circumstantial evidence.

(65,381 posts)HCl comes in plastic bottles, does not damage glass, but is hard on most ferrous metals. This is especially true of stainless steels because the chloride attacks the grain structure and leaches out nickel. (For the 20 and 300 series of stainless.) You can get bad cracking then.
Were there cracks in the porcelain or ceramic? 20% HCl is admittedly pretty strong as you can't get higher than 37%. The gas won't dissolve in water beyond that. But, unless you had some unusual material of construction, that shouldn't have happened unless there was direct exposure to the metal itself. (And cast iron is less susceptible than stainless steels, but not really resistant.)
BTW: Not sure it you can get this in a hardware store, but citric acid is a very good lime removal acid. It has a much lower pKa so it takes a little longer, but the calcium citrate salts that result are soluble to 50% in water and there are no nasty vapors and the burn hazard to the skin is negligible compared to HCl. Just a heads up at something safer.
Oxalic acid works pretty good too, but is better on iron deposits and while a bit toxic, is actually available as a food grade material so it takes a lot to hurt you. It's the active substance (aside from surfactant) in Barkeeper's Friend.

(11,843 posts)Easiest source to find is powdered wood bleach at a true, old fashioned hardware store. Don't bother with the big box stores, they won't have it. You can buy the equivalent of 10-20 quarts of hull cleaner for less than half the price of one quart. Just make sure you rinse it off the boat and especially off the trailer.

(25,763 posts)I learned my lesson a few years ago, after the tub fiasco.
I think banning of phosphates had something to do with the nasty build up. I had previously used a phosphorus based product called Sanivac.
When they replaced phosphates in the cleaning products, my tub gradually built up a film over several years.
After ruining my tub, I found out that making a citric acid paste and letting it sit is more effective than strong acid.
My water has a pH that ranges from 8 to 8.5. Chalky limestone aquifer. The 8.5 pH occurred during a prolonged drought.

(25,763 posts)Because the way tubs and showers are shaped, vinegar quickly flows down the drain.
My water has a ph of at least 8. (It has tested as a high as 8.5 during droughts) My tub literally had caliche (calcium carbonate rock) forming on it. Our water comes from a chalky limestone aquifer. During droughts it sucks up more dissolved calcium from the bottom of the aquifer.
When phosphates were banned a few years ago, I could not even touch the dishes coming out of the dishwasher without getting chalk all over my hands.
It takes either some strong acid or long lasting acid.
After ruining the finish on my tub, I researched the problem and found that using a long lasting weak acid actually works better than stronger acids.
I make a thick paste with Lemi-Shine (citric acid powder) and let it sit over night. It works.
I also use Lemi-Shine in the dishwasher.
We really should own a water softener........

(36,317 posts)That would only require lemon or lime juice, maybe vinegar -- not a "strong" acid, and certainly shouldn't damage a Jacuzzi.
I'd guess he tried cleaning it with something too corrosive and damaged it.

(67,838 posts)What kind of tub was this? Was it a cast iron/porcelain tub with jets? A fiberglas tub with jets? A resin tub with jets?
Porcelain is impervious to acids. Fiberglass and resin can be affected by even a weak acid like lemon juice. It won't eat them away, but it can severely dull a glossy finish.
I also can't imagine that a moderately strong acid solution in the pumps could cause some harm.
And what kind of acid? An acidic bathroom cleaner (which can dull a glossy plastic/fiberglas surface)? Muriatic acid used in some ill-advised attempt to get the tub clean? A body dissolving acid right out of some crime drama?
It is entirely possible dumb-assed use of one of the MANY highly acidic cleaners was the cause of all this.
Can we get a grip?

5. Jacuzzi saw Bannon in a bathing suit and self-destructed

7. Sometimes Jacuzzis melt
All quite plausible in my mind.
