Recommendations for Political Group Involvement

I'm interested in opinions regarding the most effective use of a person's limited time for direct involvement in a political action group.

The local democratic congressional district is one option. In the past, I've gone sporadically (due to work conflicts) to meetings and was a precinct community officer "PCO", so dropped off political leaflets at people's homes during elections. The issues focused on are local. The group itself were "cliquey", and a few were condescending if you weren't a regular at meetings or hadn't kept up with local political issues - "don't you know state legislator Smith is sponsoring a bill on rat dung poisoning?" Not a deal breaker but it was one cause for my "resignation" as PCO.

Other options I'm aware of that I've considered are moveon.org and the ACLU.

I joined the one for my city. Went to a protest where one of my senators was meeting with a special interest group instead of having a townhall. They also provide updates on issues and have encouraged me to call my "representatives", although not sure how much of a push that is having in my blue state. Another good thing is that they provide issue updates on both the federal and local level down to the school board.

I'm sure others will have other options.

Peace
