the tax returns reveal virtually nothing we didn't already know.
ok, he's a beneficiary of amt. not sure that's news or not, there are certainly plenty of loopholes he takes advantage of.
but he wins:
(a) it makes the whole tax issue look like there's no "there there" even if there is all kinds of crap lurking elsewhere in his various returns;
(b) it distracts from other issues like russia;
(c) it allows him to claim that "they do it too" when it comes to using contraband information. even if rachel and other actually acquired it legally, it allows him to pretend otherwise.
much as i was hoping for a win for us here, sadly, donnie won this round.

(8,168 posts)I mean, nobody is interested in a story about how one of DJT's tax returns just appeared in a mailbox.
Nope.
Nobody.
That's why both websites where it's published have crashed. No interest. None.

(11,923 posts)I mean I would love to see the tax returns of some of my neighbors or business competitors. Where do I go to obtain them ?

(52,224 posts)which is how we usually get them from candidates.
the provenance of these returns is not clear, but it's quite possible that donnie (or, technically, melania), authorized this very limited release.

(52,224 posts)it's part and parcel of why i'm a democrat, why i'm a liberal.
i'm skeptical of authoritarian power, whether government or business, and i rally to the defense of the individual, the citizen, the consumer, the little guy. i want government and businesses to do good things, and believe it imperative to be constantly vigilant to keep them doing the right thing.
but yeah, it also means i can't go in for lurching back and forth between over-excited and crushed with every tantalizing tid-bit of political tease.

(52,224 posts)but the real incriminating information is in parts of the tax return to which we're not (yet) privy.
so for the time being, it's nothing for our side, and it lets donnie win some p.r. points.
plus, i'm still discounting a watergate-like scenario given a republican congress.
