(24,412 posts)I'm surprised that hasn't been mentioned yet given how prominent it was for the past 8 years. Tying anything, especially health care, to "Europe" seems to be used a lot to smear something.

(36,464 posts)It's code for I hate ______________ (blacks/Hispanics/gays/women/disabled/transgen/...).
I've noticed some FB acquaintances who will never say they hate a specific minority group, but they will state with venom how much they hate liberals. It is also politically correct to say you want to kill/deport liberals.
I called out a cousin of mine once. I said, I'm liberal. But you're not that kind of liberal, he said. Yes I am, I said. I'm exactly that kind of liberal that you can't stand, according to your FB posts. I'm the kind of liberal that doesn't want anyone to be homeless, whether they work or not. I'm the kind of liberal that believes that health care is a right. I'm the kind of liberal that wonders what is the point of a national defense budget if we don't take care of our people and our country? His response? "You obviously aren't or I wouldn't like you."

"Homeland" has given me hives ever since it came out of Dubya's mouth, and he managed to enshrine it in federal agencies like Homeland Security.
Homeland, like Fatherland and Motherland, is a "blood and soil" word, with heavy connotations about who is entitled to citizenship and most especially, who is not. It's very Old World, to say the least.
My entire life I have been a citizen of my country, America; my nation, the USA. Citizenship is attained by birthright and by asking to belong -- not by race, religion, or ethnic origin. We are better than that -- or so we thought.
