The 140 characters never appealed to me but I know a lot of people love it.
It seems it permits just enough comments to get some people into trouble.

And I despise "link to Twitter." Hate it. It's making DU suck.

(43,181 posts)Perhaps brevity isn't my strong suit but I would go absolutely crazy being confined like that.
Plus all the hashtags and ampersands and misspellings (both unintentional and intentional) make it visually unappealing.
It's a great tool to see how popular a topic is trending and for breaking news, but personally I don't care enough for it that I would use it myself.
Plus it tends to feed narcissism even moreso than other forms of social media.

I gave up on FB too. I had someone destroy my professional reputation there and I haven't recovered.

(17,622 posts)...anti trump stuff, dog related things and other stuff I support but other than that I don't even go into FB to read anything from any of my 'followers or friends' or read comments about my posts. I do use the FB messaging to stay in touch with family but other than that I feel FB is a huge bulletin board. I do like twitter because its fast and efficient and I get Twitter notifications about 20 min before something appears on 'breaking' news. Don't use Instagram, LinkedIn or any of the other social media sites. I make baskets and I do have a FB page ( and Pinterest) to post my creations to sell but even that is neglected.

(3,827 posts)on the Internet-- I've been using it since 2008 and have met really interesting people in my local area who are involved with Moral Mondays and other Dem. causes here in North Carolina.
It is also a way to attack the lies that the NCGOP/RNC/CheetoInChief/Deplorables spread on the Internet. The Republicans have been using Twitter in a very dark way by spreading fake news, and working with Russian trolls-- most of my 1500 followers try to bombard their lies with the truth. I can see why some on DU wouldn't like like Twitter's open forum-- Most of our opinions on here are censored, unlike Twitter's wild west open range.
Twitter (for me) is a great source for breaking news, comedians, and networking in my area- I've always been open to new forms of social networking and communication(s).
I honestly believe that Twitter helped elect Roy Cooper over Pat McCrory here in NC-- I had a group of NC tweeters that I worked with who were active in countering all of the lies from Ricky Diaz, Dallas Woodhouse, and the NCGOP-- Plus, HB2 and all of the press that received was pretty much part of McCrory's downfall.
The Dem Party should start coordinating Twitter groups before the GOP wins the propaganda war on the Internet-- And I'm talking about using the younger generation to actively go against the lies that are spread by them.

(454 posts)I used to use Twitter a lot to interact with others who shared some of my hobbies, and met a few great people that way, but it was sucking up too much of my time, so I don't use it anymore. Facebook is just something I loathe and only use it as a contact list. I have an account on LinkedIn which can be pretty good for keeping up contacts, but I rarely keep it updated. I'll used Goodreads when I'm in the mood, but haven't been lately.
Overall, social media has some benefits, but is primarily a huge time-waster when we could be doing something either more productive or more fun without all the stress.
I also don't have a smart phone and just keep a pre-paid for emergencies. I don't like the feeling of being "on" all the time and prefer my privacy.
Social media can contribute a lot to stress, anxiety, and depression and many of us overuse it to a point where it is severely unhealthy. (Not to mention issues with people getting run over in traffic or getting into car collisions..it's not just texting, but also feeling a "need" to constantly check emails, facebook, etc.)
As much as I love the internet, it's also important to turn things off and breathe.

(4,835 posts)It's interesting to me that between here, Facebook and Twitter, the same news trends constantly.
I went for a while without feeling the need to constantly monitor politics (let's call that period of time the Obama administration) but then, well Trump. Now, I feel like I need to check in constantly so I know whether I need to head for the hills or not.

(2,535 posts)As far as Facebook goes, my independent son and daughter-in-law refused to send me pictures of the grandchildren but instead told me to look at them on Facebook. (51,129 posts)One great thing about Twitter is you decide what you see, to a great extent. I see the Parrot of the day, for example, glorious color photos. Also, archaeology news.
Another great thing is following hashtags like #TrumpRussia to catch the very latest news. I use the Latest tab for such topics or search hashtags. Plus, the Photos tab has all the best memes.
My stats are unusual. I have twice as many followers as tweets because i only tweet my own important academic items and research updates. I follow three times as many people as i have followers. I'm considering starting a second account to tweet politics too.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,853 posts)and not even very much of that. FB can be quite irritating, with all the photographs of grandchildren (honest, I don't give a flying fuck about your grandkid) and the Share if You Agree posts. The herd mentality, even when I (rarely) agree with the post.
Lately someone I worked with many years ago has popped up with the Right Wing Share if You Agree posts, and I always push back at him. I keep on thinking he's blocked me, as his posts will disappear for a week or so, and then pop back up. Right now he's the only rightwinger who shows up on my FB page, because I've made it clear I don't tolerate that crap, so I'm sure I've been unfriended or blocked by lots of people. Which is fine with me.
Does DU count as social media?
