"Thank you for contacting me about the President’s ties to the Russian government. I appreciate your comments and am grateful that you took the time to reach out to me.

I share your concerns and agree that the United States must take immediate action. The resignation of Michael Flynn as National Security Adviser because of his contacts to Russia, persistent reports that there was contact between the Trump campaign and Russian individuals and recent news that the Trump administration has been pressuring the FBI with regards to its ongoing investigation show that this issue is serious, growing, and not dissipating anytime in the near future.

As one of the two most senior Democratic members of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the ranking member of its NSA and Cybersecurity Subcommittee, I am committed to leading our current investigation into all of these allegations to reveal the truth on behalf of the American people.

In addition to the important work that my committee is doing, Congress should convene an independent commission to investigate the President’s relationships with Russia. We cannot allow foreign governments to interfere with our democracy. Moving forward, please know I will continue to monitor this situation closely. The American people deserve a thorough inquiry into the administration’s connections, and I will continue urging my colleagues to act. Executive Branch officials, including and especially the President, should be held to the highest moral and ethical standards. I will do everything I can to ensure these individuals remain under the strict scrutiny of Congress.
