Trump and Ireland

I need to vent.

So the Taoiseach (basically Prime Minister) of Ireland was here this week.

Again, I need to vent, but I need to be a little guarded in what I say.

Taoiseach Kenny pressed Trump on granting Lawful Permanent Residence status to the 50,000 undocumented Irish immigrants in the US (yes, it's that many, and that's actually a conservative estimate). This is par for the course. This has happened at least since the Clinton years, possibly earlier.

How to say this? There are signs there may be motion on that.

So, while the media fawns over Kenny delivering a strong pro-immigrant message at the meeting, in fact Trump seems to be sympathetic to the idea of granting residency to undocumented Irish immigrants in the US. And Kenny knew that.

Meanwhile (and I stress this is third-hand): Trump seems to have asked Kenny, "So, don't you want Northern Ireland as part of your country?"

Again: none of this is first-hand. So, grain of salt. But... Jesus.
