Is it hard-wired into the human species to believe that they'll never get old?

I know when I was young, I never thought I'd be in my 60's ( I am now).
I've heard other people say similar things.

Yeah, it happened to my grandparents...but I'd thought, it'll never happen to me.

I look in the mirror and see my mother - a woman with a good heart and loads of issues that made her impossible to live with as she got older and she lived to 84. DH reassures me I have not turned into my mother but that's my biggest fear.
