(4,492 posts)Don't they know that Trump's cutting of arts funding hurts their business? Many people who learn a musical instrument do so in school (and that is their only opportunity). If he cuts funding for public schools, music programs are on the chopping block.

And yeah, mixing politics and business is always stupid, but going rabidly pro-Trump when your clientele is the folk music community in Chicago is sheer lunacy. As is moving to DC, which if anything will be more hostile, and also home to what is probably one of the best folk/ethnic music stores in the country, House of Musical Traditions (OK, it's in Maryland, but right off the Metro)

And once again, I have read something by a tRump supporter where they don't actually say anything about WHY they are supporting him. The whole thing seemed to be about the bad anti-Trump people making their lives miserable (not really any evidence of that either!).

(7,237 posts)I play a few musical instruments and run a small business. I nowadays have to travel 30 miles or so to get to a music shop because so many have gone out of business (they can't compete on price with online outlets - which it sounds like this couple now plan to become) and I know how hard it can be to keep a small business going.
But I'm finding it hard to summon much sympathy, aside from the Trump-supporting nonsense.
She says:
So this is the second time they've had business troubles and asked others to bail them out. And now, presumably, those lovely Chicagoans who helped them out last time won't have anything to show for the support they offered in the past.
She says:
So, at a time when their business was supposedly seriously struggling, it somehow seemed like a great idea to pay for fares and accommodation to visit DC for a jolly.
Based on the evidence, I'm not impressed with their judgment and sense of priorities. Maybe they should drop Mr. Trump a line and see how generous he is.

You don't have to read between the lines to see that she became utterly obsessed with Trump campaigning and didn't put much, if any, effort into the business:
They set up the shop in August 2015. She was doing all this pro-Trump stuff from March 2016 onward.

(3,335 posts)failed and she wants to blame the failure on Trump protesters rather than delving into other possibilities for their failures. For instance she spent a lot of time discussing the various types of musical instruments they carry, which sounds to me like they have a niche market which probably attracts a very small segment of the population. The fact that they were making money in the beginning is probably attributed to the fact that they had picked all the low hanging fruit that they could i.e. family, friends, current musicians, etc. I read nothing in her whine session about how they were reaching out to and grow their business that was unique particularly since they had just launched a new business and seemed to be relying on their past experiences to carry them through which had also been a failed business.
I never understood businessmen and women, small or large, who put their business and livlihood at risk by mixing their business and politics. Particularly when your business is just starting up its your sole source income. Trump in particularly has been especially polarizing which makes her and her husband appear even more foolish in putting their livelihood at risk behind someone who made it a point of driving a deep wedge between half of the nation during the campaign and feeling no need to try and rebuild the divide he had caused once the campaign ended and the task of governing began.
I have no empathy for this woman, but it looks like they are looking for jobs in the Trump administration now. Sorry but like many here, I hope that administration will be very short lived.
Denzil_DC
(7,237 posts)dived into what sounded like full-time Trump campaigning after they'd been in business just six months!
Some of those instruments are lovely, and I'd like to get my hands on them for a play. But they're very specialized. And pricey. Definitely niche market stuff, as you say. No wonder he has to play lots of gigs and take on a lot of repairs. It's more like financing an expensive hobby, by the sound of it.
I agree about mixing business and politics. A couple of years back I found out our bookkeeper had a Twitter account, part of the name was their business name, so it stood out to me. I had an idea we weren't on the same page politically, but she was constantly posting the most atrocious and often somewhat offensive tripe about Scottish independence etc. I've made it a policy to do my best not to let differing views on that issue come between me and folks in our community, but it didn't please me, and other clients (they don't have that many anyway) might not be so charitable.
I just checked out the Gofundme page again. They're now up to $14,756 ( I thinkthey were on $6,000 or so earlier today), so not a great haul considering the Fox & Friends exposure. They've had 9 donors in the last hour. Sure, it mounts up (one of those within the hour was for $100, maybe three for $50), but unless some of the RW websites get behind them and make them a "cause", it looks like this might peter out quite quickly.

Your preference in voting does not automatically deserve a Scarlett letter. I'm sorry you've experienced this hypocritical condemnation. YOU BUILT IT!
Ms Tucker, from the info posted on that very page, a number of very generous people from their community in Chicago did a heckuva lot to HELP them build it - and this is the thanks they get!

(1,035 posts)Many businesses fail in the first five years and it's hard for any brick and mortar shop to compete with e-commerce entities. For that reason, Hubs and I order books from places hundreds of miles from our house to support independent booksellers.
I think the business was failing and the owners thought they could monetize their Trump support.
To borrow from Mulvaney, I'll be compassionate and not give my hard-earned money to people who have been ineffective in running a business.

(9,350 posts)This sounds like a scam. It is very possible that she and her husband opened this business with the intent to eventually go to social media claiming that Liberals were harassing them and then close down the business once they had received enough money. We have seen this play out before. I am not sure how many of the stores that claimed they needed money to stay open because of liberal harassment eventually closed their doors after taking the money. What ever happened to the Pizza shop that asked for money and then, at least temporarily, closed after receiving a large sum of money?
Already this woman seems to be saying they will not open a new brick and mortar shop, but will have an online store instead. It seems like the real reason behind this go fund me campaign is to get enough money to move to Washington, D.C. now that Trump is the President. Liberal harassment is a much easier way to get money than saying they would now like to live in Washington, D.C. and want others to help them pay for the cost of moving. They also, probably rightly, think they would get more money claiming liberal harassment.
It does not make very much sense for them to want to move to Washington, D.C. unless their true motive is the be involved in the Trump Administration. Washington, D.C. is, at least, just as black and liberal as Chicago. Further down in her post she mentioned that she and her husband wanted to be involved in the Trump Administration in any way they could. That seems to be a more likely reason for their decision to close their shop and leave Chicago. If Liberals were harassing a person, I doubt they would want to trade one liberal city for another Liberal city. This campaign would make more sense if she were moving to a red city. How does she expect to make more money in Washington, D.C. than in Chicago? If this campaign was really about having a viable business I would expect them to try to move to a more Trump friendly city.
