General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just walked past our local Planned Parenthood. There was the usual desultory group outside,
with *whatever* gripe against Planned Parenthood.
Oh a whim, I took a $20 bill out of my wallet and waved it at them. "Hey, I'm going in and making a contribution," I told 'em.
I walked in and told the woman behind the window that I was making a contribution. "I love what you do, I admire you, and I want you to stay here." Her response was a big smile and, "Awww, thank you!"
As I walked out, I noticed the couple who had been walking behind me was coming in the door, and opening their wallet.
I let the people outside know I'd given Planned Parenthood the money.
And off into the rest of my day . . .

(837 posts)As in telling them, "every week that I walk by and see you out here, I am going to go inside and make a donation."
Do this every week
Do this with many people.
Not necessarily large amounts, to tax one's ability to pay. But to consistently make THEM pay for their cruelty -- repeatedly.
You continue to stand here = We continue to repeatedly donate, in your face.

(4,079 posts)Whenever I see someone protesting a PP, I should thank them for reminding me that it's time for me to make a donation, and then go in and do just that.

(54,370 posts)It was a virtual who's who of "if there were someone living I could hang with for an evening." It was where I first asked Rev. William Barber if he would speak at the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia, and he said he'd be honored (and he did!). First time I saw Senator Warren in person, Rep. Grijalva, Kucinich, EJ Dionne--except for the people I already knew, it made me feel VERY small. Katrina, who has been a good friend for many years, introduced me to Cecile that evening. She is a treasure.
I did send the link to the thread on to Cecile. She gets a TON of email, as you might imagine, so even though I sent it to her personal account, she may not replay for days or even weeks, but she'll see it. If she replies and says it's OK to post, I will.

(54,370 posts)But I think she loves her work at PP too much. Remember how she destroyed Jason Chaffetz when he tried to use some Breitbart/Fox lie as "evidence" against her on some congressional hearing? She blew him away on national television when one of her assistants reminded her that what Chaffetz was claiming was a lie, and she called him on it right away, and while the cameras were rolling.
Maybe if the national mood were to swing a little farther to the left, she might consider it. Texas is a tough nut to crack.

(70,090 posts)now. fersher. but you know what i think? i think she is the kind of boss who grows great talent and there are equally awesome women behind her who can do the job, too.
but yeah, tx...
maybe run for congress from a nice blue district?
i bet a lot of folks down there ended up sorry they voted her mother out.

(54,370 posts)Cecile, you know, of course. Katrina in not only editor of The Nation, but a wit, and one HELL of a great person to spend an afternoon with. Brilliant, too, as you probably gathered from her TV appearances. Jerry Nadler is, of course, one of our heroes in the House. ALso one hell of a great guy to hang with. He is another deep-thinking intellectual who never runs out of subjects he is knowledgeable about. A real gem to have on our side in the House.

(1,520 posts)I make a monthly contribution, but I like what you did and how you did. Planned Parenthood is why I wasn't a father at 16 and my high school sweetheart a mom at 15.
As far as I'm concerned those who are against Planned Parenthood and are against their mission are pro-abortion.

(23,975 posts)...and are against their mission are pro-abortion."
Exactly! The planned part of Planned Parenthood is the whole point. So very much better than unplanned parenthood. Especially if you are a teenager.
Fewer unplanned pregnancies should mean fewer abortions. Why is that so hard for them to undertand?

(36,788 posts)Pro-life is a myth.
The supposed pro-lifers cared not when the state of Texas (republican gov) deliberately killed living baby Sun Hudson against the mother's wishes because he was an inconvenience to the state.
It is not a matter of life to the supposed pro-lifers.
It is a matter of control.

(54,370 posts)Unless someone is a vegetarian and are against the death penalty as much as they are against abortion, the title "pro-life" is a perverse (and false) label of political convenience.

(6,699 posts)It's about all I can afford...but g'damn it, I'll do it.
Never thought I'd see the day when I had to scrimp like I do. Retired teacher, Vietnam Vet...did all the right things..and I'm still living in poverty. When I get all these emails to contribute $25, $5, $3, etc...I just can't do it. I'm already eating food that should be tossed and have zero social life outside the home. Driving for Uber and Lyft to try to make my life less than poverty..but it sucks being too old to get work, and really not wanting to work any longer either.
But I'll damn sure swing by and drop off my $20.

(33,643 posts)is cause you may know somebody in a similar situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a situation like that there's only one thing you can do ...
and that's walk into the shrink, wherever you are, just walk in say:
"Shrink?!? You can get anything you want ... at Alice's Restaurant".
And walk out.
You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and they won't take him.
And if two people, two people do it, in harmony?
They may think they're both f***ots and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walkin' in, singin' a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out?
They may think it's an organization.
And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day ... I said FIFTY people a day (!) ... walkin' in, singin' a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out?
And friends?!? They may think it's a MOVEMENT!
And that's what it is, the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacree Movement
And all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it come's around on the guitar ...
With FEELING ...
So we'll wait for it to come around on the guitar, here and sing it when it does.
Here it comes ...
(for those perhaps too young to get the reference ... we all need to do this very thing )
