AL FRANKEN totally ROCKS!! He's a TRUE DEMOCRAT!!

Last edited Tue Mar 21, 2017, 05:38 PM - Edit history (1)

That was a thing of beauty! I love to listen to him speak... so calm and measured. He's focused and on-point.

He's friendly and disarming... but you know he means business. He doesn't need to SHOUT to be heard. His demeanor and sincerity are what command attention. He doesn't need to rely on distracting gimmicks.

Man, oh man! That was great!

We need more TRUE DEMOCRATS like Al Franken!

Honest tagod... he makes me PROUD to be a Democrat!

151. Now THAT'S something I could definitely get behind.

I was thinking Schiff would be a good candidate to replace Dianne Feinstein if she decides she doesn't want another term.

But he's REALLY outdone himself, proven himself an extremely knowledgeable, dedicated, and sympathetic political character. He's played it SO clean. REALLY proud of him! He's built his public profile so well! Done a FABULOUS job for us Democrats! And he's young enough still to have lots of tread left on his tires. He's a gift that can keep on giving.

Bench strength! Because we HAVE TO look ahead to 2020 as well as to 2018.

MAN would I love to see him, OR Franken, in the White House. OMG!!!! That would be so much fun!!!

be exceptional in any of those while there are many judges who would be good on SCOTUS.

81. Witnesses and nominees routinely underestimate him.

He's disarming and his folksy demeanor make them think that he's a lightweight. And then the hammer comes down, and the moral bankruptcy is exposed for all to see.

I'm proud to have him as a fellow Democrat and think that Schumer should give him a leadership role.

His overall demeanor and his propensity toward deadpan zingers keep the focus on the TARGET of the inquisition.

Franken avoids making a total spectacle of himself, he knows how to be aggressive without being a total asshole *.

Franken cornered him, backed him into a corner, then grabbed Gorsuch's reigns and led him right where he wanted. I've never seen him do anything that distracts from his message or his goal. Franken is a pro! He's a complete master at this!

* Remember the Benghazi hearings?

I'm decidedly in the Franken 2020 camp BTW ~

I think he's got the gravitas now that he's served in the Senate...he's smart, prepared, and he seems to be able to read more than nine bullets points per a page unlike the current occupant of our WH.

23. I'm singing the praises of a Al Franken (D) a Democratic Senator that I admire ...

... for his temperament and demeanor, for his steady and calm manner. He's a man that has earned my respect. His words and deeds give people a reason to be proud for being Democrats. He renews the spirit of Democrats in this difficult time. He's a beacon that will bring new voters and new supporters to our great Democratic Party.

He's very under-appreciated and it's about time that someone sings his praises. I think it's very necessary, thank you.

19. I like Frankenstein too.

Did you see the liberal lion, Al Franken, question Gorsuch? This thread is about the liberal lion, Al Franken.

Edit, and speaking of current/relevant news, Rachel just did a segment about all the fake news sources that targeted Bernie supporters. Sounds like you may have been targeted by those perps since you have a lot of fake news references. You should watch Rachel's show.

Thank dog no actual liberal would ever make a spectacle out of themselves using praise for one to make another look bad.

You do realize that many "actual liberals" (your words) were irrationally critical of our progressive nominee, Hillary Clinton. 134. The thing is that there is a VERY important hearing going on in the Senate Judiciary Committee....

...regarding the lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court of a conservative judge.

Al Franken has been doing an excellent job of questioning the candidate, and has been the standout Democrat during this hearing.

As much as we admire them, Elizabeth Warren and Bernard Sanders are not on that Committee and are not involved in any current hearings by the Senate.

93. That's interesting

because you seem to be put out over this thread. Most people simply responded positively about Al, but somehow you found the thread objectionable. If the point were merely to express support for Al Franken as a progressive lion of the Senate, there would be no need to insult those who speak favorably of him as "right wing trolls." To pretend to care about unity while insulting Democrats on this board strains credulity.

There is another site (unified by the goal of keeping the Democratic nominee from becoming president) where people actively defend Trump day in and day out, yet I don't see you criticizing them, despite being an active member there for a year. Instead you are now implying that support for the Democratic Party makes someone a "right-wing Trump troll." It reminds me of a recent article I read where the author insisted that being "progressive" meant defending Trump against allegations of collusion with Russia. They went on to insist that shielding Trump would deal yet another blow to the "establishment," which for them means the Democratic Party but not the GOP. What they call "progressive" is in fact Republican.

The salient point--the ONLY point that matters--is whether someone voted for Hillary and other Democrats in the 2016 general election and whether they will continue to vote for Democrats. Anything else is collaboration with fascism. Anyone who failed to stand up to Trump by not voting for Clinton in the GE chose fascism. What they call themselves is irrelevant. Their actions define them. Being a loyal Democratic voter who respects a Democratic Senator does not make someone a "right wing troll," anymore than continued defense of the fascist in the White House can be anything other than extreme right-wing hate mongering.

122. Bernie should be pushing for ways to actually get elected.

Sitting on the sidelines criticizing others' efforts is just pointless and self-defeating. I certainly wouldn't hang my hat on empty rhetoric anymore. It's clear that getting elected is the main goal. Purity standards is just time-wasting, navel-gazing.

Speaking of pointless navel-gazing, Thom is not a very good presenter. He relies on too many assumptions and not enough linear thought and conclusions to really be effective. I have tried to listen to him, but he makes leaps to conclusions that can only make sense if you know the emotional shorthand he is promoting. Others who rely on more realistic info like a more linear presentation, which is why Rachel Maddow is so good.

Certainly, not listening to Thom on Russian radio hardly is a way to pass judgment on other Democrats. It's just more pointless and tiresome preening over who has the most liberal creds, and that is at the core of the divisiveness that the Russians exploited to keep Democrats divided. Back to reality!

Not interfacing with voters. His constituents are in VT, and he already does several television appearances a week. Are you suggesting he give up television for radio or that he give up legislating for media?

ICE is conducting raids in VT. I have a friend, who supported him in the primary and continues to support him, who was on FB imploring people around the country to call him to get him to act on behalf of his constituents. She said Leahy was starting to slowly act but Sanders hadn't, as of this morning. Was his lack of attention to the matter due to other commitments? If so, he already appears to be strapped for time.

120. All of those are GREAT Democrats. What sets them apart from other ORDINARY politicians is...

... that they know WHO the real enemy is. They're LOYAL Democrats who respect and value the Democratic Party. They understand that the GOP must be the target of our attacks and that it's FOOLISH and SHORT SIGHTED to attack our own.

Thanks for pointing them out and reminding us all of these talented and patriotic and loyal members of the Democratic Party.

Individuals like this are shining examples of why the Democratic Party is an honorable institution... and through their tireless efforts, through the examples they set... they are bringing in new members and new voters that will support the Democratic Party.

All of these individuals are heads and shoulders above those who smear and attack the Democratic Party, and who insinuate that our party is morally bankrupt (and other lies). Those are the types of public smears that divide our members, and that drive away potential new members, new voters, new donors. It perpetuates the myth that "both-parties-are-the-same", when anyone can see the obvious truth.

We've got a great line-up! When it comes to national politics and elections, have a wealth of amazing talent to choose from in the coming years.

It's true that 2018 and 2020 are "right around the corner" ... it's fun to imagine and fantasize about who it may be. I like to think of the possibilities as well. But I'm not going to let that be a distraction for me.

Between now and then, I'll continue to SING MY PRAISES of the politicians that I ADMIRE THE MOST. For the politicians who represent the BEST of what the Democratic Party has to offer, I'll shower them with compliments and adoration.

Why? Because Americans need to know, and need to be PROUD of all the great talent that our party has to offer.

My dad was a feisty liberal New Yawker too, when he got worked up about politics he would shout, point fingers and get red in the face, I loved it and him for being so passionate.

Being a loud proud liberal is a GOOD thing.

Hell I catch myself shouting at Twitler on television, this is not the time for our leaders to be calm. And there is never a good time to be polite about injustice.

Thankfully our progressive senators like Al and Bernie aren't worried about their tone. In fact Bernie was attacked by the media last week for calling Trump a liar. That's the kind of fighter we need right now. No holds barred!

BeamMeUp, inspired by that amazing statement, I just went over, opened one thread ("Party leaders worry the Bernie Sanders wing will apply ideological purity tests", and chose this from close to the top:

"If I wanted to vote for a corporate whore theres always one available with an R next to his/her name. Dont confuse me by running one with a D, I donít want to have to think. Iíll just vote for the R where I know what Iím getting instead of having to guess."

Admittedly, it's a little...plainspoken, but not more than some others, and it is certainly in sympathy with the bizarrely twisted general attitude of that thread. Democrats are as corrupt as Republicans. Would what these supposed Sanders supporters have come to have broken her heart also?

You used a post about someone's dead mother who escaped the Nazis in WW2 to continue some primary battle that only still exists in your head.

You can't have a "Stronger Together" badge and also violate decorum in such a mean spirited way. I don't know you, but your preference for one-up-man-ship over basic human decency and civility tells me all I need to know.

If you had even a modicum of shame, you'd have deleted the post and moved on to something more productive like battling Trump.

202. Oh, I get it... I GET IT!! Editing and re-editing CIRCUMVENTS the LOCK-OUT penalty!

It's a "clever" (but not so subtle) way to circumvent the "lock-out" penalty that someone gets whenever they've had a "Post Removed" within a thread.

Anyone who's ever had a post hidden in a thread (and then tried to continue posting in that thread) is familiar with this error message:
You cannot post in this thread because you have had a post hidden within this thread.

Circumventing the rules by taking advantage of a "software glitch" doesn't seem very fair to me.

... I can tell you that such a practice does have the appearance of impropriety. Anyone who intentionally does such a thing (with malice and forethought) would risk being accused by others of being dishonest and deceptive. (But again... I don't know what this poster specifically had in mind, all I'm commenting on is the risk of negative appearance and how people are likely to interpret it.)

I wonder if the administrators of this website know that this "work-around" bug exists and that it can be used to circumvent the lock-out penalty that all others must adhere to.

I'll have to look and see if these "oh-dear" and "my goodness" and "how dare you" replies are from people who are already participating within this thread, or if they are "newcomers" who just happened to zero-in on that one particular sub-sub-thread (buried deep within an already long thread.) That would help to put things into context. (I don't have time to do a detailed examination and "forensics" right now, but I have my suspicions on what might be found.)

I suppose it depends on if the intent is to actually edit and make corrections, or if the intent is to continue participating in the thread and circumvent the penalty of being locked-out.

The admins must have had a good reason for implementing that penalty. I wonder what that reason may have been.

People not caring seems to be a theme in life lately.

All things that happen in real life are real life. That includes computer message board posts.
Of course they're "real" ... the trick is being able to discern which things in life are important, and which ones aren't. Message board posts rank at the very bottom of things that I obsess about.

Chit-chatting and bickering on a message board is a harmless pass time, but some of us clearly have a much larger emotional investment it it that others do. Not that there's anything wrong or unnatural about that. But I can assure you that there are many more important things that deserve my attention and emotions.

Putting words I never said in my mouth (again).

240. Fiddledeedee! I think you do care more than you're letting on. :-)

Besides, if she actually did "get what she wanted to say" then that should be the end of it, yet here you are keeping the exchange going. That tells me you do care, at least a little. C'mon now, admit it. Nobody is "misrepresenting" you and nobody is being "singled out". The fact is, she was having a battle of wits with other anonymous participants on an internet forum. As near as I can tell she's perfectly capable of holding her own, and isn't the delicate little flower you're now trying to portray her as being. She probably got over-excited and perhaps lost her temper... made a mistake... and was penalized for it. BFD & WTFC? Tomorrow is another day. None of this is nearly as earth-shattering or important as you're trying to make it appear to be. Someone made a tactical error and lost a skirmish, and their feelings are hurt. OMG, it's an internet discussion forum. Try to keep it in perspective. She'll just have to get over it and move on. I've had deleted posts and been "kicked-out" of an ongoing thread, but since I'm a reasonable adult, I can keep things in perspective and I'm able to just roll with it, brush off the dirt and move on. I didn't call in "reinforcements" to put out an "all hands" notice. I didn't need a proxy to continue the battle I'd already been kicked out of. I got over it and moved on, it's not that hard to do.

Why is that, because you know full well if you link to it, they will see that you are making false claims. That the post you are alluding to has nothing to do with the exchange, and that you are putting words in her mouth. That she never called the OP or the poster who responded to post #65 swine.

You know that because I already showed all of that to a different and honest poster who linked to the post you are lying about.

So link to the post. Why is that so hard? Just link to it.

246. Post 89 is not a part of this subthread nor the post that was replied to

Further post 89 refers to Republicans and those who want to cause infighting amoung liberals.

If this was in response to post 89 that is the one that should have been replied to.

This is said post:

Anyone who doesn't support ALL of our progressives like AL and BERNIE is probably a Trump troll.
Imo anyone who would attack ANY of our WONDERFUL PROGRESSIVES like AL or BERNIE is a smelly warty old troll who should be outed and banned.

I hope they read my posts and out themselves.

COME ON TROLLS, TELL ME I'M WRONG TO SUPPORT BOTH AL AND BERNIE!!!

SHOW YOURSELVES, YOU SWINE!!!

* no offense to pigs who are cute and smart, I probably should have used my mother's word for them - schweinhund. I just know that trolls SQUEAL like pigs whenever BERNIE's name comes up.

OINK OINK OINK!

This is the first attack:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=8832274

"Jack's place is a great refuge...just a positive place?"

Has absolutely nothing to do with post 89.

The attack by the poster who made the swine claim part 1:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=8835568

You have it backwards. She used her deceased mother

to shame the OP. Who does that.

Doesn't in any shape or form refer to that reply (#65). Further, in post 89 she mentioned that her mother referred to pigs as schweinhund, not one word about it being an insult.

Next post by the same poster as above:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=8836472

Calling people "swinehunds" because it

was her mother's favorite insult. Yeah, it's all there for people to read.

Again that post has nothing to do with the post replied to.

I'm glad my mom who escaped Nazi Germany and loved Bernie wasn't alive to see what happened in November either.

It would have broken her heart.

***

How odd. I post about my mother escaping Nazi Germany and it's used as an opportunity to post excerpts from someone at another website who isn't me. Someone with an aversion to punctuation whose posting style doesn't even remotely resemble mine.

I only use 'beam me up scottie' here, apparently there is another member who posts elsewhere using the handle BeamMeUp. I also go by Refugee but I haven't used that name for over a year.

Thanks for the attention, though. I love my fans.

And I forgive you for disrespecting my mother. She would want me to.

Where in either post did she ever use her mother to attack the OP? Why, if #89 was the offending post, did they not reply to it, but to a thread in a completely different subthread?

Post 89 is just being used as an excuse for attacking a completely innocent post.

Edit: Note the words used in #89, trump troll, attack progressives. Neither of which describe the OP.

Edit2: The subthreads aren't even close to each other, so you can't even claim they clicked on the wrong thread to reply to by accident.

I am so sorry that someone is dredging up comments about your mom to attack you. That is about as low as a snake's ass.

I lost my mother 16 years ago, and I still miss her. I miss her more than even when I wonder what she would say about the condition of the country today. She was always so wise, and her words would mean so much to me. Then again, I am glad that she has not had to see what is happening now. Conflicting feelings.

Don't let anyone hurt you.

I live in a state that went overwhelmingly for Bernie in the primary. The great majority of those people then turned around to vote for our nominee, many even volunteering.

We aren't doing it it we can't make critical observations.

But I don't think we need to turn this thread into another one of those, and I'm pretty sure the Bernie pushing has a lot to do with who the OP is and what some of the undercurrent of previous post on Franken was saying. I appreciate that that innuendo was toned down in this thread, and we all seem to like Franken, so cool! Hopefully we will see this over and over, from each and every one of our Democratic and progressive senators.

118. No. That was most definitely Bernie's definition. That poster used

"feeding at the trough," but it's clear that was a reference to one of Bernie's catch-all campaign slogans about purity and campaign finance. That is not holding anyone accountable. He certainly didn't worry about accountability when he put off answering the FEC about his questionable donor entries. Criticizing Democrats for operating in the system as we know it is just damaging and pointless. What makes more sense is to actually get elected, and then be in the position to effect changes.

Anyway, this thread was not about Bernie. There are other senators, and sometimes they get talked about and congratulated on great work. That shouldn't be seen as an opportunity to try and alert on posts. How would you have survived last year if you had to tolerate the irrational criticism that Hillary endured. Rachel did a great show on that last night about how Bernie supporters and sites were targeted by Russian bots to keep the divisiveness going with negative fake news stories about Hillary. You should watch that show. Highly recommended.

than that, otherwise there is no reason for our politicians to fight to change the system as we know it. I know this thread was mostly about Franken, with a little tiny bit of shade thrown in. The last one was a lot of fucking shade at Sanders. Yes there are other Senators, and I think I addressed that we should just embrace being on the same side when it comes to Franken. Maybe we shouldn't get caught up in the criticizing and defending of Sanders, at least in this thread, but nobody, you and me included, seems to be able to entirely help ourselves.

175. Sorry, but no. Just because a politician has a schtick doesn't mean everyone has

to fall for it. It is extremely damaging to try and hamper electability because of someone's ability to convince a certain segment of gullible voters that they should follow his biased view of politics. It is the system we have, and that's the system used. Trying to force people to adopt your distorted world views is more cultish and is just not realistic in the long run. Republicans would love to see Democrats unable to raise funds to run proper campaigns.

And you have no idea what or how I can help myself, but that is another tainted world view that is forced on people. If you are so worried about Sanders' reputation that you can't handle some comments or observations on a message board, no need to draw me into it. Speak for yourself.

177. fuck that. It is the system we have because people are propping it up. Corporate interests love it

the it the way it is too. It ties our hands, makes us unable to tear republicans a new one on issues of corporate financing because our hands aren't clean. and in the end, the corps use their media to destroy us anyway...except that we can never call the media out for its corporate bias because we are tied to that corporatism. We depend on those companies and that funding, and that undercuts us. Yet depending on it does not get us elected. It gets us 45 percent of the available seats, from which we can moan and groan about the horrors republicans are doing.

Yes, occasionally, our softballing team gets two years to entirely change the direction of our country, but even then they can't make it happen because we always have manchin's and Lieberman's that our establishment has propped up, ready to scuttle our ship.

By the way, you couldn't handle letting the comment go that put Sander's name in with Warren and Franken, now could you? You literally said in your last post that there are other Senators than Sanders, but you are still railing against him here, so don't pretend you aren't rolling around in the mud.

and you buy it, doesn't mean you get to abuse people who see through the bullshit. Just look at this election and you see how the Sanders' supporters were targeted because of their gullibility and the ease in which they are manipulated. It's all over the news now. Trump was using propaganda from Russia to completely con you with your own purity mantras.**

Getting elected is the only way to change anything you are talking about. Holding browbeating purity tests isn't the way. Corporations, lol! More of the naive Sanders schtick. In the meantime, Trump is busy manipulating you with your own propaganda and installing the true oligarchs into power to rob you blind! Wake up!

I see you are desperate to make this personal, which is a tiresome tactic.

181. So I'm not going to, but I could say the same about what you buy into. I could reduce it down to

something like that for my own satisfaction, but I don't need you to be a dumbass so that I feel good about myself.

And Sanders has been my favorite Senator since he entered the Senate. Previously he was among my favorite congresspeople. I didn't just discover him, nor can I think of any Russian bullshit that influenced my preference. I have said here many times that on too many things Clinton has been unfairly vilified by the right-wing. I understand why her record is complicated because of that, but given the choice, which I had, I preferred Sanders in the primary. I voted for Clinton in the GE.

But I agree with you about electability to a large extent, and I don't think outsiders are very likely to get elected given the culture of Washington and the influence of money. But it is the outsider's job to push on the insiders so that they have cover to do the right thing when it would be hard if nobody was at the gates, demanding it.

I'm not desperate to make it personal, I just think you aren't being entirely genuine. You responded to a thread about more than just Sanders, thought it was important to criticize him, and I responded disagreeing with your criticism, and saying basically "Hey, but we both like Franken," to which you came back to continue to talk about Sanders(understandable if you can't let or don't think what I said should be left alone) and tell me there are other Senators than him, which, I think I kind of said already. But it was hardly a swipe at you to say that you weren't letting it go. It was a recognition of the state of things that we are bickering over it because we both think it has to be addressed for whatever reasons. I'm not sure why you thought that was a personal attack.

As to Russia meddling in our elections, I hope we nail Trump to the wall on that.

188. Lol, your observations about me personally

don't even begin to hit the mark, but it's a tactic from the primaries to vilify a person personally to absurd levels so that their comments about Sanders can be dismissed and ridiculed. You are not the first to try it; it's a very recognizable tactic.

But back to my original comment in this subthread, insinuating that Democrats are corrupt as part of an overall smear disguised as "rebuilding" the party is a stupid thing to do. Getting elected is the only hope you have of really getting results. This is just common sense, especially in light of how much Donald has humiliated you all. What a shame.

reasonable conversations with people on these boards who I disagree with, and I have no interest in anything other than proposing my view of things and having my own assumptions challenged even while I challenge the perspectives of others. How about you point out the nasty things I said about you so that I can see where you are coming from?

You are however making up a whole lot of nonsense about how Donald has been at all a factor in my thinking. You ARE actually attempting to characterize me, my reasoning and how I arrived at it. I will not return that favor.

It was obvious where this was going.

Btw, Sanders and the divisive primary are back in the news because of current Russian investigations. It's all over the news, so don't make it to be anything more than that. There is proof that the divisiveness was used to help Trump. That's where you should direct your concern.

Criticism isn't traitorous, it's a sign that LOUD PROGRESSIVE senators work for the PEOPLE and that's where their loyalty is.

I agree with ELIZABETH and BERNIE - we need to get big MONEY out of politics. They are TRUE PROGRESSIVES and their opinions aren't popular with trough feeders. But that's what makes them even more BRAVE.

So let's hear it for AL, BERNIE and ELIZABETH - three LOUD FINGER POINTING senators who are known for speaking TRUTH TO POWER - no matter how many conservatives clutch their pearls and squeal.

97. Falsely accusing Democrats of "feeding at the trough"

is a stupid thing to do, though. That's not criticism, that's just straight up propaganda, aka fake news. You must have meant others besides Democrats. It would make no sense to falsely accuse Democrats. Your analysis is a bit flawed, as well. Conservatives would love to foster infighting between Democrats, as it works to their advantage as seen in the election.

is divisive and not valid criticism.

That's why Senators like Franken, Warren and Reps like Schiff, Denny Heck, and Maxine Waters are the Fighters we're fortunate to have in our Democratic Party. Under the brilliant leadership of Tom Perez and Keith Ellison.

is "not Trump" or any GOP would be murderer. I will vote for the person with a 'D' after his name. I am sick of ranking Democrats whether they support some 'pure' ideology...ours is a big tent party and we better get back that before there is nothing left of the progressive policies attained since Roosevelt. You want a liberal agenda ...vote Democratic- many have expressed admiration for Tim Ryan on this website...and he is a good guy...done a good job in Ohio. But I bet many of you don't know he was pro-life up to 2015. He change his position after much though and sould searching.I am virulently pro-choice after almost dying in Georgie during a miscarriage that left me infertile, but I still voted for the guy...why? He was the only Democrat running...voting Democratic is the only game in town...as spoilers like the Greens only elect the GOP...I noticed a picture go around with Stein sitting next to Flynn and Putin...hmm

136. I just read Franken's novel "Why Not Me?"

"The article also quoted an unnamed bystander who described Mr. Frankerl's platform as 'a bizarre admixture of vacuous catchphrases and vague, formless attacks on some imagined status quo by an obscure political parvenu.' The reporter should have identified the bystander as Times columnist William Safire ... .

"A good offensive strategy assumes that all your potential opponents ... have taken money from large corporate interests and super-wealthy individuals, none of whom can be expected to donate anything to you. These big donors don't do this out of the goodness of their hearts. They do it because they expect something in return. Hopefully, these corporate interests will include banks, which as you are so fond of pointing out collect the fees charged at ATMs.

"The Gore campaign hit another snag today ... . Dranken taunted Gore ... by shouting, 'Tell the truth, ATM stooge,' 'Gore's a whore,' and 'Eat me.'

"N made me watch tape of MSNBC appearance five times in a row. Very depressing. N says not to worry. Fewer than fifty households watching MSNBC yesterday. ... Splurged on hooker.

"Universal agreement that I will win Iowa caucuses tomorrow. ... Now, on verge of victory, I am wondering if I really want to be president after all. I have seen more of America and Americans in past year than in entire previous lifetime and am not so sure I like what I see. If Iowa and New Hampshire are any indicator, country is riddled with S.P.*

*Stupid People

Then Franken wins the election, immediately gets depressed and spends all his time watching TV, is soon impeached.

Or how much they can help? It makes no difference if they have the 99% the same views, the same goals for their families, the same hope for the country? Some may be more enthusiastic about social change and want to take advantage of an openness to change, some may be more conservative and believe you cannot do too much too soon, but most of all the end goals are the same. There will always be policy debate with the more liberal and conservative folks that make up the left of center. Its a big big colourful tent. But this is not the time to stoke our differences, its a time to come together.

253. You see, I think its more important to woo people into the party with new, better, policy

or even just re-embracing its traditional values more, than give ultimatums to those standing on the edge. Some folks just are different, more independent, or it works better for them. Even though there seems no good reason from some points of view for one to remain stoic.

It is more important what is inside a person.

And lets face it, we are talking about one little old man who has always worked from outside the party. Its not some kind of leaking bucket.

And perhaps it would be better all around if Bernie did join full time. But its not going to happen. So we have a choice, embrace our odd ruffled ally, or continue to whisper insults behind his back and refuse to have respect for him until he gets his star.

He'll keep working for us his own way regardless. I just wish it were at least "if you can't say anything nice...."

220. It's how we keep (or become) the majority party. I'd rather vote for a DEMOCRAT who I

agreed with only 75% of the time instead of a Republican who happened to agreed with me 95% of the time. Having (or keeping) the majority in the two houses of Congress is important. It's important nationally, and it's important in State Houses as well.

This is how it works in a two-party system. I can't believe you don't know that, or that you didn't honestly understand the importance of political party. It's more complex than the Seussian Sneech analogy you were aiming for. (Or were you just waxing philosophical?)

254. But no Republican would ever agree with 95% of what you believe in or vica versa

Its a false analogy. But I'll indulge. How low would you go to vote for a candidate with the proper letter, but that doesn't fully support your values? 60%? 40%? (if the other option is a politician that had some kind of epiphany of conscience between elections and flipped 95% his positions and was now voting almost entirely with the Democratic party)

I'd rather voter for an Independent that works 95% with Democrats, and my personal values, than a D stamped politician like Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp or, Joe Donnelly who work against it.

256. I'd rather have those "imperfect" Democrats you mentioned instead of a Republican.

I promise you that if you replaced Manchin on the WV ballot and instead used your ideally pure-and-perfect Democrat, then the Republican would win. (Same thing would happen with whatever you consider to be a 95% acceptable Independent.) So, yep... I'd much prefer to have Manchin instead of a Republican.

Its a false analogy.
No it's not. You asserted that party affiliation didn't matter. I told you that it does matter and I provided you an example with exaggerated variables so that you could easily understand WHY it matters. Now, you want to quibble about the percentage points. Sure, whatever. It changes nothing.

Party affiliation matters. Having the majority matters.

257. Put it this way Nurse Jackie

If I were severely injured, and I had a choice of someone running to my aid who was dressed up in nurses costume heading for a costume party, or a real nurse that was off duty who happened to be there to help me, I'd choose the latter.

I guess I have more faith in, if you build it they will come. Sanders proved and still is proving with his poll numbers, how even what would be regarded as a radical leftist by many on the right a few years ago, can move the conversation forward, if that message is given a chance, and presented by the right candidate.

The problem of running a small r Republican against a big R Republican is that it gets you nowhere in the long run. Its treading water. And sometimes its worse, with important legislation not being passed (Lieberman on the public option). I know its what we've done for decades now, but especially in this new era of an openness to unconventionality, its time to shoot for more than that. Believe.

259. This is a very myopic view.

Sanders proved and still is proving with his poll numbers...
What's he proving? I'm sure HE is very pleased with HIS poll numbers. But at what cost? Pity he has to attack and smear and mischaracterize the Democratic Party in the process. How do his popularity polls benefit the party?

I guess I have more faith in, if you build it they will come.
Nonsense. What's he building? He's saying a lot of things that tear-down the party, but I'm not seeing this "building" you speak of.

The Democratic Party isn't corrupt. We aren't intellectually bankrupt. We aren't feeble. We aren't lazy. We aren't doing nothing. We aren't "the same as" or "just as bad as" the Republicans. Where's the "Outreach"? Where's the building of a unified and stronger party? Smearing the party leaders and hurling insults is divisive ... and a divided party is a weak party.

Saying things like "at least he's trying" (and implying that nobody else is doing anything) is wrong.

Re: Costume party... talk about BAD analogies! GMAB! TOTAL FAIL

(But amusing anyway. You made me laugh.)

261. You are reading into a lot of what I said

Its not that Sanders is proving HE is great with the poll numbers. It is that populism can work both ways. He is proving that even single payer or $15 min wage, accepting climate change, or other progressive Democratic positions can be successful. Its about ending the defeatism of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. And I also disagree with being rightfully critical of some of the decisions or non-decisions of the Democratic party are "mischaracterizations". We evolve. Both Hillary and Obama evolved on gay marriage. Only the GOP seems to believe they are perfect all the time. Or worse that there is some fantasy era in the past that was perfect and they want to go back to that.

"Nonsense. What's he building?"

Once again...its not about Sanders! That time I was speaking specifically about the party itself. If the Democratic Party stops being afraid of Red States, goes there, talks to them not in DINO language, but with a positive message from a charismatic speaker about the possibilities, they will come. Deans 50 state strategy worked better than anyone expected as well. Too bad the DLC and Debbie Downer dismantled that idea.

I never meant to imply that nobody else wearing a D is not helping. I would like to see him get even more support.

I guess it just seems ludicrous at how much space is spent on DU trying to disparage such an ally. An ally that also is gives his opinion on what we may have been doing wrong. The Democratic party would be foolish to ignore the advice of someone that not only shares their values, but helps to popularize those values. I just don't get it.

I would welcome Hillary to be more visible now as well. Maybe if they both appeared together again it would dissuade the animosity in here.

208. Thanks!

I'll revisit themes and often reuse the same phrases, but strict "copy/paste" to sing someone's praises seems to be a very shallow exercise.

Doing something like what you describe suggests to me that someone is insincere, or maybe they just lack the conviction of their words, or it could be just plain old laziness. I'm reminded, somewhat, of the things that float around on Facebook (ie: "share if you agree" or "copy and paste for your status update if you agree".

In the past, I'd seen examples of what seemed to be duplicate "copy/paste" OP messages and duplicate "copy/paste" replies... but I automatically assumed that I was being forgetful and forgetting who-said-what-when-and-where. (I assumed it was just my old brain that couldn't keep up with the fast pace of this website, and the flurry of activity.)

Maybe it's happening more often than I realize. I'll have to pay closer attention to see if I can detect a pattern.

Everyone's looking for a shortcut these days, I suppose. Whether it's a call-to-arms to swarm a clicky-clicky poll, or to flood the inbox of political rivals with identical emails and faxes.

Anyway, thanks again for your kind words. I appreciate that.
