Republicans couldn't hold rank and pull through because the AHCA wasn't deadly enough.
The GOP needs to be shoved into the garbage bin of history.

(4,407 posts)They have two more years to keep screwing everything up. My hope is that this inspires more people to get out there and speak up. Without the fear of the moderates, this bill would have passed and it would have looked like the Freedumb Caucus wrote it...

(50,557 posts)The whole reason: EVERYONE despised this bill.
The Koch Brothers couldn't stand it because they thought it "extended Obamacare."
The Democrats hated it because it was an atrocious piece of work.
The House Lipton Caucus hated it because it wouldn't kill enough people.
And the House Wants To Be Reelected Caucus hated it because it would kill too many.
The only one who actually liked it is Donald Trump.

(9,527 posts)The bill failed because they couldn't find a common ground between the edges of their party. Some of the no votes were against it because it didn't fuck over enough people. Others, particularly in the Senate were against it because it fucked over too many people (particularly groups likely to vote Republican).
It speaks to the biggest impediment for Republicans. Part of their party is too ideologically opposed to government to effectively govern (unless it's about things like making women/minorities/poor people second class citizens). But part of it is still about more traditional Republicanism. The loudest part of their base spent the last 8 years throwing a temper tantrum about Obama and insisting that their elected officials. It insisted that Democrats were all evil and unamerican. I think there's a lesson in that for Democrats as well although not to the same extent since the further left doesn't think that all government is evil and so aren't trying to blow it up.

The Bill did not pass because the hard right did not get what they want - and what they wanted is much worse than what was already a horrific bill. As you accurately note, for years republicans ( of ALL stripes) complained about Obamacare, even making repeal a focal point of the elections. Some of these same republicans who disliked the AHCA voted to repeal obamacare when they knew Obama would veto the repeal, instead of trying to fix it.. and in the face of resistance and unpopularity among their constituents they've had no choice to trash the bill publicly. The GOP is a hot mess.
