One of the greatest things about today - was seeing the power that we citizens can still assert and *this time* get results.
For example, last weekend there was the video clip of Congressman Sessions in Texas, arrogantly dismissing his constituents at a town hall. Even having the gall to say that he understood *why* people were frustrated - because they just wouldn't listen! And that Congressmen would stop meeting with constituents because they wouldn't listen.
Then early this week, he became a voice of "we need more time" "we need to explain this to people" a slightly more (albeit dense) responsive stand that recognized that folks were active, upset and scared. It was part of the movement in different parts of the GOP that was giving some wiggle room away from the march to vote as is ASAP.
By yesterday the polling came out with the devastating numbers of voters against vs. for the bill - a whopping 3:1 against. That is 3 of every 4 voters (statistically) that were against passage of this bill. That is it wasn't just so many people showing up when Representatives held meetings, it was also so much one on one discussion about the legislation and proposed changes that such a decisive, national (even in GOP districts) common agreement/conventional wisdom of opinion had spread across the country.
Yes many other factors played in. But the rattling by the resistance, the awakeness of the citizenry and the showing up/contacting representatives , I believe, was a major, major factor.
Members of the Resistance - take a bow.
Members of We the People (aka US citizens) - take a bow.
Remember this moment as we face setbacks and defeats.
For the context above I give you the clip of Rep. Sessions and the lyrics (to the song "Deep in the Heart of Texas" that started ringing in my head upon seeing the video.
Voters are mad,
'Cause they've been had,
Deep in the Heart of Texas.
Showed up to meet,
Some to tweet,
Deep in the Heart of Texas.
The angry crowd,
Got very loud,
Deep in the Heart of Texas.
The Congressmen yelled,
Ya'll Go to Hell,*
Deep in the Heart of Texas.
I'll vote repeal replace,
I'm in your face,*
Deep in the Heart of Texas.
The crowd then shouts,
"Vote Him Out"
Deep in the Heart of Texas.
*My interpretation of the intent behind his actual words.
