Heinrich Faust wants to know the secrets of nature. He tries science, religion, occultism. His thirst for knowledge is insatiable.
The devil, Mephisto, appears and offers him a bargain: He will show Faust all the secrets of the world, but if Faust ever feels sated and wants to settle down, then his soul would be forfeited. Faust agrees.
Mephisto and Faust go out to party. Mephisto does one of his magic tricks to produce more wine, but this somehow ends in a fist-fight. Mephisto and Faust narrowly escape.
Mephisto takes Faust to a witch-coven, who give him a potion that makes him a young man again. But in a mirror Faust has a vision of a dazzling woman...
Faust runs into Gretchen in the streets and is immediately smitten by her beauty. He wants to conquer her.
Faust stalks Gretchen. Some stranger sees that and challenges him to a fight. Faust kills him. It turns out, he was Gretchen's brother, freshly returned from war.
Mephisto uses his connections to cough up some jewelry as presents for Gretchen and she eventually agrees to meet with Faust.
They have sex and she gets pregnant.
As she's pregnant out of wedlock, she gets shamed by society and joins a nunnery.
Faust and Mephisto break into the nunnery to free Gretchen and the two lovers are finally united. He wants stay together with Gretchen... And with that Faust has lost his bargain with the devil. Mephisto drags his soul to hell.
Gretchen is left standing there, screaming his name.
