'Have you heard of Susan B. Anthony?' Trump quipped. Twitter was not amused.

Trump spoke to a women's empowerment panel Wednesday and praised the "incredible women leaders" in his Cabinet. He also spoke of the contributions of figures such as Abigail Adams, Harriet Tubman and Susan B. Anthony, as Women's History Month comes to a close. Trump said Adams was "very much a pioneer" in advocating women's rights. And about Tubman, Trump said, "She was very, very courageous, believe me."

The trouble came when he got to Susan B. Anthony. "Have you heard of Susan B. Anthony?" Trump asked in what seemed to be a sarcastic tone. Members of the audience chuckled in response."I’m shocked that you’ve heard of her," he quipped. The president went on to say Anthony "dreamed of a much more equal and fair future, an America where women themselves, as she said, 'helped to make laws and elect the lawmakers.'"

twitter was not amused:

4. The likely backstory:

Mar 2017

A speechwriter (or Ivanka or KellyAnne or someone) wrote the speech and included a mention of Susan B. Anthony.

TRUMP: Who the hell is Susan B. Anthony?

WRITER: She was a famous leader in the women's suffrage movement and a courageous advocate for women's rights.

TRUMP: I never heard of her. They're not going to know who the hell she is.

WRITER: They'll know. She was quite famous.

TRUMP: I don't think they will. If I didn't know, why would they know? I think you should take her out.

WRITER: Trust me, they'll know who she was. This is a speech to a women's empowerment panel and you have to say a few words about some great women leaders.

TRUMP: ...All right. Leave her in. ...But they're not gonna know who the hell she is.
