Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley resigns

(CNN)Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley resigned Monday in the face of impeachment hearings over allegations that he tapped state resources to facilitate and hide an extramarital affair with a former aide.

Bentley made the announcement, effective immediately, shortly after he was booked into Montgomery County Jail and pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to campaign finance rules. He was charged with one count of failure to disclose information on a statement of economic interest, and for failure to file campaign finance reports, according to AL.com.

"I have decided it is time for me to step down as governor," Bentley said. "I'm leaving this office that I have loved to focus on other and possibly more effective areas of service."

Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey was sworn in Monday night as the 54th governor of Alabama.

Like they did with Sanford. And they reelected Vitter and DesJarlais.

If he decides to run for office, they will elect him. And nobody will intervene and stop him. If someone tries, the court will decide to allow him to run.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WKRG) — Robert Julian Bentley has been booked into the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office amid his resignation as Alabama Governor.

Bentley’s booking sheet on the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office website shows a mugshot and it does list two charges against him: “Failure to File Camp” and “Failure/Disclose Eco.”

The first charge is believed to be related to campaign funds, while the nature of the second is still unclear at this time.

Word of Bentley’s decision to resign comes on the first day of impeachment hearings. He is accused of abusing his state powers to try to hide his romance.

And just what might those areas be, Mr. Bentley?
