Religion & politics don't mix tell Trump & Congress

Donald Trump has promised to “get rid of and totally destroy” the Johnson Amendment, which is the federal law that ensures non-profit organizations, including houses of worship, do not endorse or oppose candidates. This law protects the integrity and independence of houses of worship and other tax-exempt organizations, as well as our elections.

That's why Americans United for Separation of Church and State is fighting back.

Last week we joined a letter signed by nearly 4,500 non-profit organizations across the country asking Congress to leave the current law in place. Also last week, 99 religious and denominational organizations delivered a letter urging Congress not to weaken or repeal the Johnson Amendment.

Additionally, two new polls show the public agrees with us. A new Independent Sector poll found that 72% of all voters want to keep the Johnson Amendment in place. And a PRRI poll found that the majority of all religious groups, including 56% of white evangelical Protestants, oppose allowing tax-exempt houses of worship to endorse political candidates.

Thanks to the support of our members, Americans United has been fighting to protect the Johnson Amendment for decades. With our Project Fair Play campaign, we help houses of worship understand the law, and report those that purposefully and blatantly violate it. And our Legislative Department has been battling any attempts to repeal or weaken the law for many years.

Help us fight attempts to repeal or weaken the Johnson Amendment. Tell the president and your member of Congress to maintain the protections for all tax-exempt nonprofits and keep the Johnson Amendment in place.
