1. If they specify which provisions of shari'a they object to

it would be interesting as hell because right wing Christians would start opposing them as stepping on their own patriarchal and misogynistic toes.

They target Sharia solely because it's Muslim yet the religious Right and conservative allies are pushing the same misogynistic discrimination and oppression of women.

6. There are serious problems with Sharia law

One is the requirement to sever the offending limb of a thief. Another is zina, the area of law under Islam regarding sexual morality, where women are mandated to be stoned if they commit adultery. The most widespread interpretation of zina is that gays should be killed as is mandated in the hadiths. Laws like this exist in the Old Testament but are never followed today, with the official Catholic teaching being that Jesus invalidated most Levitical laws. Not sure what technical justification Jews used to ignore these laws, but they've also clearly dropped these rules as well.

There's no sense in defending a barbaric set of laws. Why the left chooses to die on this cross, as they are in Europe, I'll never know. Anyone who desires that these laws be implemented in society should be involuntarily committed.

would be unconstitutional. RW Christians push for them based on bigotry and the fact the Establishment Clause isn't in their copies—they think their own religious-based laws are just fine.

and their state constitutions not to allow any laws that are sharia laws that would be impermissible here.

In fact they only bring sharia law in, as a court determining if a law fit "sharia" would have to learn all about sharia law and interpret it.

Why would a state need to pass a bill that calls out one religion when it would be unconstitutional from any religion?

Personally, I'm far more concerned with the very real fact of states' legislatures passing laws justified by Christianity that strip civil rights from LGBTQ folks or make women's reproductive health care inaccessible.

Not so concerned with this xenophobic imaginary bullshit about Sharia Law.

all the mysogonistic anti-reproductive rights laws are religiously based, therefore unconstitutional. Seems even more solid to me than the often debated privacy argument (tho that was strengthened when med files were made sacrosanct).

13. Funny, Christians are the ones pushing anti-lgbt and anti-women's rights laws in this country

I'm not worried at all about Sharia becoming law in this country but the religious right has been working non-stop to roll back our rights for decades. And they've been succeeding when it comes to restricting abortion.

These anti-Sharia bills are discriminatory and I'm glad Americans United is fighting them.

Discriminatory rhetoric and policies that target people based on their religion are harmful to us all. In truth, an attack on people who follow one faith undermines the protections that apply equally to all of us, no matter our religion or belief. That’s why we are fighting the anti-Sharia bills.
