Eyes on the prize: SANCTIONS. Putin/Trump spat: all theatre.
After all he's done, Putin is not going to endanger his plan to have Trump lift the sanctions.
Unfortunately, Trump has not been making progress on his part of the bargain. Thus, a playlet: Trump will hit Putin's ally. Putin will complain, but Trump will tame the Russian bear and Putin will submit to Trump's force. Then Trump will show that he can forgive and "mend fences" with Putin and to show what pals they are, drop sanctions.
