A stunning report from the Associated Press revealed the Trump administration is circulating a tax reform proposal that would permanently undermine Social Security by eliminating its primary funding source.1
Its a total reversal from Trumps campaign pledge not to touch Social Security and it would pave the way for future benefit cuts by forcing Congress to find new sources of funding for Social Security each year.2
A lobbyist close to the Trump administration is pushing this plan in Congress right now. We need to fight back and make sure that Trumps sneak attack on Social Security does not gain any traction on Capitol Hill.
Tell Congress: Stop Trumps sneak attack on Social Security.
Trumps tax reform proposal would reportedly eliminate most of the employee contributions to Social Security and replace the funding with general revenue. This seemingly simple change would make Social Security funding part of the regular budget process, leaving it subject to benefit cuts and other attacks each year at the hands of the right-wing extremist Republicans who currently control Congress.
This latest Republican attack on Social Security is part of a broader tax reform plan that would also drastically cut taxes for Donald Trump and his billionaire cronies. Its a backward proposal that would further tilt the playing field in the American economy in favor of the ultra-rich.
Tell Congress: Stop Trumps sneak attack on Social Security.
Social Security has had a dedicated funding source since the program was enacted more than 80 years ago. It is the basic contact that made Social Security one of the most successful and popular government programs in U.S. history: Workers contribute part of their wages and are later compensated with a pension when they are no longer able to work.
The Trump administrations attempt to end that arrangement is a backdoor attack on Social Security that would inevitably lead to devastating cuts to the Social Security benefits tens of millions of Americans rely on to buy their food and pay their bills. As Social Security Works President Nancy Altman put it, its a Trojan horse that would lead to the destruction of working Americans fundamental economic security.3
Its up to us to fight back and protect Social Security for all current and future beneficiaries. A strong show of grassroots opposition to the Trump administrations proposal will show members of Congress that attempts to undermine Social Security will not be tolerated by their constituents.

(32,705 posts)How can he eliminate Social Security's primary funding, when we're the primary funding?
I mean our paychecks (taxes), we put money into Social Security every week.
It's our money. He can't get his hands on it.

(9,253 posts)It is instructive to note that the employee contributions are mandated by the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA). It is useful to pause and reflect on the name, the Federal Insurance Contributions Act, and the fact that it was enacted in 1939.

And YOU voted for him.
What are you going to DO about it, Trumpers? Trust that the pathological liar will nonetheless lead you to the Promised Land? Do you know what Trumpy believes the "Promised Land" to be? It's an early residence in the mortuary.

Sorry to sound grumpy- I appreciate your post. However online petitions and polls really aren't effective.

(3,557 posts)I believe that cutting Social Security will be enrage people at least as much as healthcare - and probably more so. To me, social security is a much bigger issue than healthcare.
If trump really wants to enrage the public, this is one way to go about it.

(9,253 posts)Tell them how losing Social Security would affect you. Tell them you expect them to OPPOSE any such cuts or they will NEVER get your vote (even if you'd never vote for them anyway).
Anyone will tell you that CALLS and VISITs are MOST effective. Petitions are LEAST effective. I nag people here all the time to CALL and go to Town Halls and Rep's offices.
I posted what 'Credo' sent me so everyone could see the links at least, and BEWARE what the bastards are trying to do.

(4,033 posts)is that the Democrats in Congress would filibuster this BS forever and shut down the gov't if necessary to prevent this piece of malice shit from ever seeing the turdblossoms desk. Even a few Repukes would realize that they have enough non-idiots who vote that signing on to this would be political suicide.
They don't expect to pass this - this time. It used to be that no one would dare even suggest cutting Social Security. Now is is no longer 'unthinkable'. So they toss this out there knowing that it doesn't have a hope of passing, but then they can back away from it and weaken SS in some other way and claim that 'they were willing to negotiate'.
We have to tell them loud and clear: NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER!

(4,033 posts)only changed the filibuster to say that you couldn't filibuster a Supreme Court nominee. The Dems had already changed the rules so you couldn't filibuster a Federal Court nominee, but left the SCOTUS alone. So far we still have the filibuster for normal legislation - sort of, as long as it doesn't qualify for 'reconciliation'.
