SNIP..............
In recent years, finding themselves increasingly ideologically alienated in the U.S., certain members of the far right have found sympathetic kindred spirits among Russias well-connected elite.
According to a bombshell report published Sunday night by the Washington Post, some current and former members of the U.S. intelligence community believe that forces within the Russian government are actively cultivating these relationships with disaffected members of the conservative fringe, although its unclear why.
The Post report begins with Brian Brown, president of anti-LGBTQ hate group the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). Brown grew up thinking that Russians were the enemy, but now that his own country has largely embraced the sanctity of same-sex marriages, Brown feels more at home among his anti-LGBTQ Russian counterparts.
What I realized was that there was a great change happening in the former Soviet Union, Brown said of a 2013 visit to Russia, where gay men and lesbians are routinely attacked in the street, beaten, raped and in the Republic of Chechnya rounded up into internment camps, tortured and executed. There was a real push to re-instill Christian values in the public square.

(4,192 posts)It's not just the "far right" as he says but republicans in general who are being duped by Putin. They just refuse to own up to anything they fuck up, which, politically speaking, is just about everything these days.
I'm sure they would be happy to be able to persecute men and women here for being gay, lesbian or transgender. In their lust for blood they apparently don't want to see just how badly they are being manipulated.
Sadly, most of these people will wake up tomorrow and continue being the same assholes just as they were today. These fellow Americans... these repug types... love America... other than its people and its diversity of culture. But by God they love America!
The absurdity of the republican mindset grows ever more ridiculous with each passing day and I suspect we are going to be shown just how low they are willing to go. I think, however, that every time one of us tells them to fuck off when they spout their conservative bullshit it throws them off guard. Let's keep it up and this last ditch effort to install the fascists will fail miserably because we are laughing at them and spitting on their ideology whenever they try to legitimize their version of idiocracy. Don't let them get a toe hold anywhere.

(2,037 posts)Many Russians still blame the U.S. for their collapse 25 years ago - not the Soviet collapse as much as the economic collapse that accompanied it.
Promoting the very people who are most likely bring about such a crisis in the U.S. - the John Birch types - would, for many of them, be payback.

(54,013 posts)Like they jackhammered our democracy, installed an idiot president, and subverted trust in the Fourth Estate, but it's just all a distraction so that no one will notice when the Ruskies knock over ever major casino in Vegas in one night.
There's no "secret scheme"--Putin's agenda is obvious: keep the West fractious so he can reassert Russian influence over Eastern Europe.

Maybe I'm missing some other point, but I wouldn't call that a small thing.
