http://www.golfdigest.com/story/details-details-donald-trump-has-plaque-at-his-golf-course-commemorating-civil-war-battle-that-never-happenedIt's worth reconsidering only because of a New York Times report from Tuesday that says Donald Trump's Northern Virginia Trump National Golf Club features a plaque between the 14th and 15th holes honoring a Civil War battle at that precise spot. The inscription, signed by Trump, reads:
(Photo credit: New York Times)
Many great American soldiers, both of the North and South, died at this spot. The casualties were so great that the water would turn red and thus became known as The River of Blood. It is my great honor to have preserved this important section of the Potomac River!
Nice sentiment, small problem: there apparently was no such battle.
The Times checked with various historians in the area who had trouble tying the site of Trump's course to any such event.

(22,035 posts)I did a fast search and couldn't find the article from last November but one of the golf magazines did a survey of players on the men's PGA Tour and they found that the golfers voted for Trump at roughly an 85%-15% split. It's not surprising, really, since many of those players come from the wealth of country clubs and many of them have built their own financial fortunes.
It's a little ironic, though, since it's well known that Trump cheats when he golfs. You'd think that the players would frown on such behavior. I guess personal finances come first.

... Mr. Trump repeatedly said that numerous historians had told him that the golf club site was known as the River of Blood. But he said he did not remember their names.
Then he said the historians had spoken not to him but to my people. But he refused to identify any underlings who might still possess the historians names.
Write your story the way you want to write it, Mr. Trump said finally, when pressed unsuccessfully for anything that could corroborate his claim. You dont have to talk to anybody. It doesnt make any difference. But many people were shot. It makes sense ...

(10,127 posts)No. Uh-uh. No way. Nothing like that ever happened there, Richard Gillespie, the executive director of the Mosby Heritage Area Association, told the Times.
<snip>
Trump, who is a leading Republican candidate for President, questioned how historians could dispute the battle. "How would they know," he told the Times. "Were they there?"
This was written in 2015 apparently.
