1. That's what the EC was supposed to do

instead of just rubberstamping their party's choice. They were supposed to keep dangerous populists who are too ignorant to run the country out of office, that's the core reason for it. The founders feared "the rabble" and were afraid the landless and uneducated would fall for frauds and demagogues every time and needed a fail safe to keep them from destroying the country.

Turns out they were dead wrong, that the people have generally made the better choice and the EC has put unfit men into office more than once.
