This is Why People Think the Democrats are Out of Touch

Some wonder why two-thirds of the American people think Democrats are out of touch.

The explanation is media coverage.

A good example occurred yesterday. Hillary Clinton made the point that many areas of rural America don’t have high-speed Internet and this could be a cause of slow growth in these areas. She went on to point out that some areas don’t even have cell phone coverage.

As Dave Weigel pointed out in the Washington Post  the flood gates of criticism then opened, the gist of which is that she is an out-of-touch elitist. The fact is, her campaign had detailed policies for improving broadband coverage, an issue on which Trump, predictably, is clueless.

Clinton was anything but out-of-touch.

But the media narrative overwhelmed the truth. As Weigel wrote:

“And the firmly established narrative of Clinton and Trump is that she couldn't connect to rural voters, whereas he was a “blue-collar billionaire” who made surprising emotional connections. Trump may be the first president whose plunge to 40 percent approval was marked by stories about the voters who still loved him. And Clinton may be the only politician who can talk about the need for rural broadband — at this point, an almost banal priority of rural politicians — and be accused of snobbery.”

And the media still calls Trump a “populist” after he tried to take healthcare coverage away from 24 million people and is actively attempting to engineer massive tax cuts for the super-rich.

I don't even like hearing it repeated on DU. I'd much rather hear about policy and positive news.

Popular general election victor 2016.

Popular senator from N.Y.

Popular SoS.

Unjustly vilified for sport by anyone seeking to make a name for themselves in RW circles. Fuck the right and fuck them!

I am convinced that the MSM is the number one enemy of democracy right now. Rethugs would be gone if the news accurately reported what they were up to and what it would cost average Americans.

Rural America is getting screwed by the Telecom Companies. Ask yourself, would any of you want to start or buy any Business if you do not have a solid Internet Access.
Doubt it.

There you go. Ask Comcast or Time Warner.

7. Are you familiar with the Connect America Fund?

It's a program started by the Obama administration which pays rural telecoms to provide internet access. Apparently there's still money available from the last budget because I've installed some of these projects.

I'm a telecommunications contractor FWIW.

Like anything with Obama's name on it I don't expect Trump to continue with this assuming he gets his way.

is that he is going to have to do like his forefather before him and pack his shit up and move to the city to learn a new way of life. Hillary Clinton was dead on with that speculation, I just wonder how she or anyone is suppose to debate policy with someone that tells lies to fit his audience.

They've been controlling the message since the 70's, and it's become corporate to the extreme.. Broadband and wider cell phone coverage for poor rural areas elitist? Goddam fuckers. It's the 21st century.

Keeping Americans poor and dumb.. the corporate way, and the media's in on it.

13. Don't have high speed internet...

via cable, phone and satellite internet prices are, well, sky high.

While traveling I stopped over in a rural, GOP and low income area. After checking into the hotel, went over to a local brewery. It was the start of primaries and before the GOP debate, the place was empty. But about 10 minutes before it started, a ton of people showed up, ordered beer and they switched the TV's to the debate.

That's when it occurred to me, there is probably a significant group of people who have the basic satellite service which usually doesn't carry Fox or MSNBC. So they order a beer or two and watch from there. This also probably fester's "group think", I didn't stay long enough to finish watching and to see what they discussed, but I bet whoever spoke to their issues is the one who got the attention. And I bet during a Democratic Primary Debate, they probably ignored it....save their money for the next GOP.

Trump spoke their language and they voted for him. It really is that simple.
