Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) earned a standing ovation from his fellow Democrats after he ripped into the Republicans health care plan on the House floor Tuesday.
McGovern started by pointing out how the GOP bill takes away protections for Americans who have preexisting conditions, and he slammed the GOP for pretending otherwise.
To claim or to imply that the Republican plan covers people with preexisting conditions, it is a lie, he said. It is a lie. And lets be honest about it. This does not cover people with preexisting conditions. And to come on the floor and say it does, to try to fool people, well, you may get away with it in the short term, you may get a headline but I tell you people will figure out soon enough when they are denied health care coverage.
McGovern also slammed the GOP for pushing a bill that would rip away health care from an estimated 24 millions of Americans while at the same time cutting taxes for some of Americas wealthiest people.
You should be ashamed, he said. To have a health care bill that cuts Medicaid by $880 billion so you can give a tax cut to the wealthiest people in this country, you should be ashamed.

(40,209 posts)That is the problem. They are devoid of empathy and shame. It is the way their brains are wired. They simply don't care.

(4,522 posts)They think that the gop is "strong" to deny the "weak". They want to associate with the "strong" rich, powerful - just like the lower monkeys giving bananas to the top monkey.
They're being played for fools. We need to educate them that its a "STRONG" move to demand healthcare, not "WEAK". Change the narrative and get them to understand the gop is treating them as SUCKERS and get them to realize they need to stand up for themselves (they won't react to standing up for others).

(63,221 posts)It's also because the republicans hate the same people they do. They are all irretrievably stupid. I don't think there is any way to turn them around.

(5,730 posts)Dems and educated people tend to use understatement, intellectualism and logic in their language.
Repubs and less educated use hyperbole.
Each side is suspicious of the other's language. It is like a cultural anathema.

At this time I don't think any party is willing to get rid of the filibuster for legislation, and if they tried, I don't think they have the votes in the Senate

(9,895 posts)These are not empathetic, human beings we are dealing with in any sense.
They are reptilian bastards and craven opportunists that do not care how many people they condemn to death just so long as the "evil federal gummint" does not help anyone they don't like (ie. that looks, acts, talks, feels, loves or is different from them and their cult/clan).

(12,650 posts)There's another problem the House has, that if someone may have taken a potty break or be getting a drink of water or checking their phone, their "neighbor" will reach over "helpfully" cast a vote for them.
Votes don't get locked in until the gavel comes down.
