Army secretary pick: Universal health care robs churches of opportunities to bring people to Jesus

Trump army secretary pick: Universal health care robs churches of opportunities to bring people to Jesus

BRAD REED
05 MAY 2017 AT 11:02 ET

Mark Green, a Republican state senator from Tennessee who is President Donald Trump’s pick to be army secretary, once told a church group that he opposed universal health care because it makes people less likely to embrace Christianity.

As the Washington Examiner reports, Green said in 2015 that it should be the Christian church’s role to help provide sick people with health care so they can more easily convert them to their religion.

“The person who’s in need… they look to the government for the answer, not God, and I think in that way government has done an injustice that’s even bigger than just the creation of an entitlement welfare state,” Green said. “In this setting, I’ll share the story, I think it interrupts the opportunity for people to come to a saving knowledge of who God is.”

Green argued that since Jesus regularly used his powers to cure lepers, the modern-day church should take on a similar role. “If you look at the Gospels and you go and study the Gospels, every person who came to Christ came to Christ with a physical need,” he said. “It was either hunger or a disease.”

me: "yes".
ER: "but are you willing to convert?"
Me :"No thanks.."
ER: "Well, I am afraid we can not help you, if you won't convert"
Me:"I seriously don't want your fucked up religion..."
ER: "enjoy the rest of your life, however long, that might be, sorry we can't save your life, but its more than just your soul we are saving, its ours too".
Me: "While letting me die?"
ER: "Why yes, you either convert to Jesus or die.."
Me: "Is there a Jewish ER some where?"
ER: "No idea, our ambulances are busy, if you don't sign this conversion form, we can't help you"
Me: "But..."
ER: "We're sure there must be a Buddhist ER some where in the city, or you could go back to the country you came from... either way..good luck with that..."
Me: "But I was born here..."
ER : Not at this hospital, we don't allow Buddhist Births here. -shrugs- sorry..now please leave before we call Security.."

right now my options are either to laugh or cry. I went to a school ran by the Southern Baptist Convention and I would not be surprised if were to support something like this. The school had a dorm. Most of the students were from South Korea, but there were some from other parts of the world. I remember them talking about how they had converted two Muslim students from, I want to say Sudan, but it's been so long I forget, but I do remember it being a part of the world that isn't friendly to those who leave Islam. I always found it really messed up since those kids could have gone home and gotten hurt.

Swell.

If this fellow hasn't been confirmed by the Senate yet, I hope someone on the committee has this information so they can ask him a question concerning who the hell he thinks he is.

Before I feed you please quieten your stomach so as not to disturb the bible story I must tell you before you get to eat.

I once worked with my local "Food not Bombs" organization. Whenever we went to feed the homeless, they would always ask us why we weren't forcing them to a bible story. We always told them they shouldn't be forced to listen to one just to have food in their bellies.

basic needs to be a right. When the church can swoop in and emotionally blackmail you into thinking that your unworthy ass was saved by jesus, then it has a new convert. They want to leave this sort of thing to charity, because when you owe your life to the church, you may just give it to them...and hell, churching is big business, and is power that people don't want to let go of. The other upside is that it allows people who are in the church and contributed to this poor retch's sustenance and maybe, conversion in any way, to feel like a particularly good person, and part of a particularly generous faith, for doing so, even while the person rails against more taxes or government programs.

That's the real medicine that it keeps behind locked doors. The snake oil that prayer can heal is the powerful hope element. I mean, dude's not wrong, I"ll give him that. He's crazy for laying it out so plainly, AND for being so aware and YET joyful in such a fucked up manipulative practice, but he's managed to accidentally say something profound.

Combine this and the R push for "Religious Freedom" and it is very easy to see who will and won't be provided healthcare if this keeps going.

We need to remember this and other pearls of wisdom from Radical Righties, particularly the self-styled "Christians". Up to now, their self-proclaimed "good intentions" have given them another thought screen. With the damage they're doing to the ACA, this screen is falling to pieces.

I think TRMS had a segment on him being close to declining the post because he isn't looking so good.

Most churches I know would send the sick and injured to the ER.
