Huckabee defends Colbert from calls for FCC punishment
By John Bowden - 05/06/17 08:55 AM EDT

Former GOP Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee made a First Amendment argument in defense of late night talk show host Stephen Colbert on Saturday.

Huckabee scolded fellow conservatives as "misguided" for demanding the FCC take action against the comedian over his recent comments about President Trump.

"Calls for FCC to punish Colbert are misguided," Huckabee tweeted Saturday. "Don't let gov't decide when speech is ok-let YOU decide by not viewing/buying."

Trump supporters called for Colbert, host of The Late Show on CBS, to be punished after he made a controversial joke about President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c--k holster,” Colbert said on Monday.

On Twitter, the hashtag #FireColbert trended as users lambasted Colbert's "homophobic" remarks.

The FCC said this week it will investigate and take "appropriate action" after receiving "a number" of complaints about the episode
