(59,503 posts)agencies and by Hillary Clinton in one of the debates where she referred to the statement of the 17 agencies. That all happened more than a month before the election.
In contrast, the ONLY notice that the French got was a statement put out by the Macron campaign about 5 minutes before the quiet period began. The government did nothing itself other than make a very strong statement about the news media honoring the quiet period. The Macron campaign had earlier spoken about the fake news from RT and Sputnik and that they had been the target for a huge number of unsuccessful hacking efforts.
I suspect that two big things may have made the difference -- one was the American experience that Macron did reference when speaking of RT and the hacks, the other was that Macron was seen as "clean" and that he forcefully had denied the allegations that Le Pen hinted at in the last debate and actually filed a suit.
In addition, I think a clearer case could be made that the Comey letters and the email investigation itself were the cause. The argument on the leaks is far more subtle and hard to prove. Where you can see the polls shift drastically with the Comey letters, I did not see any clear impact when the leaks happened.

(4,187 posts)Fillon and Hamon told their supporters to vote for Macron. The French recognized the gravity of the situation and voted for a centrist to stop the progress of a neo-Nazi fascist.
If it had been the U.S., there would have been endless complaining about how Macron shouldn't have won, how his campaign had supposedly cheated, how Mélenchon or Hamon would have been stronger against Le Pen, how leftists should stay home because Macron was too centrist, how leftists should vote for Le Pen to teach the Socialist Party a message, how Macron wasn't really that different from Le Pen, how five years of Le Pen wouldn't be the end of the world, etc., etc.
I congratulate the French people. They have succeeded where Americans have failed. May we learn our lesson this time.

(14,167 posts)What has been accomplished has no precedent or equivalent, he says. People said it was impossible. Thank you for the efforts, and the risks some people took. I take full measure of the honour.
He says he is aware he has not been given a blank cheque by those who voted for him simply to keep out the extremist parties. He says he will stand by his engagement to protect France.
He says of those who voted for Le Pen that he understands their fear and their anger and will do all he can to ensure during the next five years that they have no further reason to vote for the extremists.
This evening, he says, it is Europe and the world who are watching us.
Macron says the task facing us is immense, and will start tomorrow. It involves reinforcing Frances economy, building new defences, ensuring the safety of all French citizens. It is a huge job and it will require more of the same audacity that has brought us this far.
This task will require the involvement and commitment of everyone, he says. It will require the courage of truth. It will require the building of a real and strong majority, a majority for change that the country needs and deserves.
We have the strength and the energy. We will not give in to fear, to division, to lies, to a love of decline or defeat. I know what I owe you, to my companions, my family, my friends. It will not be easy. The job wil be difficult.
I will tell you the truth but your fervour and your courage will carry me forward. I want the unity of our people and of our country. And finally, I will serve you with humility, with force, and in the name of our motto: Liberty, equality and fraternity.
I will serve you with love, he says. Vive la République, vive la France.

(13,037 posts)So glad the french people chose to keep fascists from taking over their country. They need to keep this fight up, however - Le Pen got 34% of the vote and this will embolden the extremists moving forward.
The map on NYT's story is resoundingly blue: https://www.nytimes.com/. It gives me hope democracy is still alive. We as Ameiricans need to make sure it doesn't die in our country.

(985 posts)Direct popular vote, partisan locals can't reduce the # of polling places in unfavorable districts from 16 to 1, no games to remove voters from rolls. I'm not familiar with voting details in different countries, but it seems like the US may be one of the more corrupted democratic systems out there (in an actual first world democracy).
