Interviews show that many American voters in 2016 thought Democrats favored the rich.

Therefore, they were much more inclined to vote for Tromp.

It is clear that the Democratic message simply did not reach a lot of Hillary's supporters.

Any thoughts on how to correct this for the elections coming up?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2017/05/01/why-did-trump-win-new-research-by-democrats-offers-a-worrisome-answer/?utm_term=.15dba2cb56b6

"As the Democratic Party rebuilds itself for the 2018 and 2020 elections, Democratic strategists have been preoccupied with a pressing question: Why did so many voters who backed Barack Obama in 2012 switch to Donald Trump four years later, and what can be done to win them back?

"Top Democratic pollsters have conducted private focus groups and polling in an effort to answer that question, and they shared the results with me.

"One finding from the polling stands out: A shockingly large percentage of these Obama-Trump voters said Democrats’ economic policies will favor the wealthy — twice the percentage that said the same about Trump. I was also permitted to view video of some focus group activity, which showed Obama-Trump voters offering sharp criticism of Democrats on the economy."

Supporting GATT, NAFTA and the TPP isn't a very good way to show that you care about working people.

Trump exploited this every chance he could, and it worked.

Note to jury: the soul of the Democratic party is being destroyed by the amorality of free trade, if this earns me a hide so be it.

Automation and robotics are more to blame than trade is. TPP has a lot of good qualities. I think there needs to be a national discussion about trade. It's not the job killer people think it is. Without NAFTA the US economy would tank.

because they are hostile to the Democratic message. They mentioned Clinton only in connection with the fake scandals the GOP ginned up while muting her speecvhes, much the same as they've done with every Democratic candidate since Reagan abolished the Fairness Doctrine. The media can't be counted upon to get any sort of message out except "vote Republican."

The next election is going to have to be fought at the purely local level, the old fashioned way. It can also be fought online, but given that most news portals will be hostile, that will be an uphill battle, too. Whatever social media have morphed into by 2020 will undoubtedly be a help, but local and grassroots efforts will have to be the bulk of it.

'George Lakoff, retired UC Berkeley professor and author of Don’t Think of an Elephant, is one of a very few people in Berkeley who does not underestimate Donald Trump. “Trump is not stupid,” he tells anyone who will listen. “He is a super salesman, and he knows how to change your brain and use it to his advantage.”

In fact, Lakoff predicted a year ago that Trump would win with 47% of the vote. (The actual total was 46%.) Lakoff even told Hillary Clinton’s campaign and PAC staffers how to counteract Trump’s message. But they couldn’t hear him.

As far back as 2006, Lakoff saw the writing on the wall. “A dark cloud of authoritarianism looms over the nation,” he wrote in his book Thinking Points, A Progressive’s Handbook. ”Radical conservatives have taken over the reins of government and have been controlling the terms of the political debate for many years.” The progressives couldn’t hear him, either.>>>

I remember someone writing a response to my suggestion and saying that "when they go low, we go high" and that insults were childish.

I don't think my earlier suggestion was incorrect.

Once again, thanks for reminding us of George Lakoff and his important views!

I think its worth ensuring that our leaders are focusing on the right people and the right goals. It takes voicing our praise and our criticisms, not lock-step loyalty.

But I cannot understand how anybody would think that the Republicans are somehow less the party of the Rich. That is the Republican MO and they barely bother with a veneer, and Trump is nothing but an elitist narcissist who has gotten richer by screwing little people. Much credit does go to the media there, so my hat's off to it for being legendarily lousy, but it is hard when you do see it, to understand how others could have been so blind to it.
