China vows to protect Paris climate agreement...

You know you are on the wrong side of History when China is using your decision as a photo op to look like the good guy. In truth it's hard to know how serious China is on this IMHO. It's possible that they truly believe in the agreement and want to reduce emissions and eventually become carbon neutral. Indeed of all the countries in the world China and India know first hand better than anyone else the harmful effects of pollution. Many days of the year the air in Bringing and Shanghai are barely breathable without a mask. So while global warming itself may still not have drastic impacts for them, they certainly have a daily reminder of the destructiveness of industry and pollution on health and living standards. That being said given the type of government that China has, the level of corruption, and their thirst for power, I would also not be surprised if this is just political manoeuvring designed to place China as the good guy.

But whatever their reasoning. The US still ends up looking like the doofus they are in wanting to pull out of the climate agreement.

Many Americans don't realize how bad smog once was in America, clean air has turned many people into believers that industry will do the right thing and keep it clean if regulations are removed.
