It seems to me that symbols mean more to many Americans than actual freedom. So as long as they have symbols to cling to, they don't much care what the reality is.
But I'm a cynic, so...

(31,819 posts)I miss my dad every day. He died in 2011. But I'm glad he's not here to witness this. I just remember watching Red Dawn with him back in the 80's and him saying "God damned it all they could!"
He was a Green Beret in the Vietnam Era and was die hard anti Russian. He hated Reagan and would be saying "I told ya so! They didn't change! You didn't accomplish anything when you tore down that wall."
