They wanted him gone or punished. You could fire him and explain by saying you want to be magnanimous to both parties and do what they wanted. You don't even have to bring up the fact he's getting close to the Russian connection. Just say he told you three times he wasn't investigating you personally. That ought to do it Sir."

4. It's a political move. A lame one but political none the less. The Democrats disliked Hillary

because of the emails. The Republicans didn't like the fact that Comey held a press conference to announce he was not prosecuting Hillary. Because of Trump's mentally instability, besides being a manipulative sociopath, he desidesw decides to fire Comey. which is what both parties wanted but for different reasons. He's so ignorant of Federal politics he uses simple moves for his simple mind thinking there will be an instant benefit to soothe his narcissistic personality. Not that politics is "harder than I realized".

He wants to be perceived as magnanimous by his peers and the masses so they will be rewarded for his charity and generosity of spirit.
Charity and generosity of spirit that exists in his own mind but not in the real world. It's even becomes a non reality to the people he fooled and I'm sure he gets his jollies fooling people.
