President Donald Trumps own intelligence chief knocked down his accusations that his predecessor ordered an illegal wiretap against him during the election campaign.
Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, testified Wednesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee, where he urged the reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Acts Section 702 which allows American intelligence agencies to target the communications of foreigners outside the U.S.
Trump accused the Obama administration of illegally targeting his campaign for surveillance under the act, but Coats stated flatly that had never happened.
In the nearly 10 years since Congress enacted the (Freedom Act), there have been no instances of intentional violations of Section 702, Coats said. Id like to repeat that: In the nearly 10 years since Congress enacted the amendments to the Freedom Act, the act that established the FISA, there have been no instances of intentional violations of Section 702.
