'The Sanders Institute': Jane Sanders Launches New Progressive Think Tank

Nicole Gaudiano , USA TODAY Published 2:41 p.m. ET June 7, 2017

A team of Berniecrats, including Jane O’Meara Sanders, launched a nonprofit, educational organization today that aims to “revitalize democracy” with progressive policies to address economic, environmental, racial and social justice issues.

“The Sanders Institute” is one of the organizations that Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said last year would be created to help raise awareness of “enormous crises” facing Americans after he ended his bid for the Democratic nomination. His wife Jane is one of the 11 founding fellows who will direct the organization. Bernie Sanders will have no role in leading the institute.

The Sanders Institute has an office in Burlington and three staff members, but the fellows are participating as volunteers. "Our Revolution," the political spinoff organization from the Sanders campaign, contributed seed money to launch the Institute that will be repaid once the nonprofit begins raising money for its work, Jane Sanders said. Bernie and Jane Sanders also contributed seed money from their personal funds.

"We'll be producing original content and telling the stories of the people we have met along the way and the issues that are of concern to them," Jane Sanders said in an interview. "We saw wonderful initiatives throughout this country in terms of dealing with the issues that are most important to various populations. And what we want to do is shine a light on them and think about how we can best replicate them."

THAT is why it should be mandatory.

Any candidate who hasn't the integrity to show they have nothing to hide can not ask to sit in the highest office of the land.

We all contribute to the President's salary & security.
After DTrump, the people have to know that every candidate is not coming to us without corrupt influences.

Open all tax records.

Trump would have never reached the Presidency.

I have no idea why bernie refused to step up as Clinton did and let the public know they weren't hiding any financial corruption.

Seems like it should be a mandatory requirement.

It simply clears up all question if someone wants to sit at the highest office in the land.

Trump's corrupt ties would have been revealed had he had to open his tax records.

Seems to be a lot of disgusting things going around

But her being under FBI investigation completely slipped my mind, which just makes her heading a think tank, all the more ludicrous. As to the other 2, don't know, but wouldn't be surprised if Weaver was somehow involved.

Any think tanks promoting rational thought are good at this point.

I don't want Bernie to run for office again. But some more discussion of economic problems in middle America, and labor-rights solutions for those problems, will be helpful.

But Jane Sanders is not the person to head up a think tank or any credible organization. I consider her judgment flawed and the fact that such judgment was in a large way responsible for the ruin of a good college must be considered.

How bout someone who isn't under FBI investigation for starters.

She's already giving it a bad name..how bout someone not as polarizing as Jane. Someone who can reach out to everyone.

She's got a pretty toxic reputation & that simply eliminates great big sector of voters who would have been open to a think tank like this.

I'm guessing Jane sees an opportunity..$$

As is her history with leading something big, like a College

She needs to remove her name from that org.
Not credible .

Sure, it's important that progressive efforts are supported, but not nearly as important as the reflexive demeaning of anything relating to Bernie Sanders.

Hope for the best? Brilliant sarcasm, that.

The key is never to say the word 'primary' itself. Otherwise pretty much anything is permitted. Be passive aggressive and concerned!

This same strategy was used to great effect against LGBT DUers in times past. (There used to be a lot more of us here.)

He's been named as the director, too.

I think this is telling: "It will not be about Trump; it will be about the issues facing the country,” Sanders added.” As if Trump isn't an issue facing the country. Right now he's a big reason we're facing a lot of issues. It's clear that the "Trump is just a distraction!" crowd will have a seat at this table, and that's not good for any progressive movement.

Edit why the hell was that post removed? Jesus. It stated that their son is a co-sponsor.
