Let's talk about sex education

One of the crazier accusations from right wingers is that our children are being forced to learn to tolerate the 'homosexual lifestyle' by incorporating details about homosexual sex relations in school sex education programs.

This is of course completely false. Our kids aren't being taught about heterosexual sex relations either. Especially if they are in a state that teaches abstinence only or if abstinence is included in the curriculum.

Here is one of the more widely used textbooks. It is written by an NBA player named AC Green who remained abstinent until he got married. He has never taught school, has no expertise on child development or human sexuality, but he decided to put an abstinence program together and it is selling like hotcakes all over the country.

Game Plan is an excellent new tool for abstinence educators in their battle to preserve the innocence of our children. In an age of relentless sexual imagery in the media and society as well as in most sex education classes, this upbeat, positive curriculum provides welcome relief. Game Plan was developed in cooperation with basketball star A.C. Green of the Miami Heat. The eight-session curriculum - including student workbooks and a teacher's manual - uses sports themes to promote the benefits of abstinence until marriage. It begins by inviting students to list their goals in making "a game plan for life." Succeeding chapters deal with sex in the media, the "rules of the game" - why boundaries matter, the risks and consequences of sex before marriage, "halftime" - planning for the future regardless of what's already taken place in a student's life, developing healthy relationships, and "winning it all" in the good and worthy goal of marriage. Students are encouraged to take the "Abstinence Pledge" and make it work. (Studies have shown that teens who take this pledge are at less risk of pregnancy and STDs.) Great for secular groups! 7th - 9th grade.

Here is what kids are taught with this program:
1. The media wants you to have sex.
2. There are sexually transmitted diseases you can get without having sex.
3. All you need to do is find a hobby, like basketball, and you won't want to have sex until you are married.

States with ‘abstinence-only’ sex ed programs rank highest in teen pregnancies.

If your state has an abstinence only sex education program or even a program that mandates that abstinence is included in sex education, you should be outraged. If you're a parent, teach your child about sex. It won't happen in school.
