(8,155 posts)It's jumping up to almost 130 now and there's no way that's accurate. Most of the stations in the Valley are showing around 118 to 122.

(15,805 posts)Are there safe places where they can get out the heat and cool down and at least get water?
Gravitycollapse
(8,155 posts)There are good number of shelters downtown but not everyone will be able to get help. There are people going around handing out water as well.

(15,805 posts)It seems like officials should have some sort of emergency plan in place to set up cooling centers to help the homeless survive. Los Angeles has them in parks where they might be in a Recreation building or maybe just a tent with big fans and water misters. Others are in community buildings like senior or adult care centers that stay open late for people during a heat wave. Not everyone wants to go there, but they are ready for the homeless and folks who do not have air conditioning at home.

(7,428 posts)At least in the Southwest a combination of shade and air movement can make a life-saving difference. In the climate of the Southeast -- especially the Gulf Coast -- there is absolutely no escape from it. Shade, air movement, makes no difference at all in those temperatures and power outages would result in tragedy.

(32,082 posts)What happened to that? That station said it went to 130. Do you believe that or was it fake?

(51,129 posts)It happens to my local report also at times.
I also saw it rise to 129.7° this afternoon not long after it was 124.5. I don't have an explanation.

(25,556 posts)Most of those are home stations, not NWS. I've gotten readings of 120 at my house in the winter. I have a courtyard and it traps heat. The all time record for San Antonio is 111.
I also recorded 115 in the shade in the coolest part of my yard one year.
A probe too high, too low, too much sun etc
LeftInTX
(25,556 posts)It is due to siting of a home weather station. The temperature is accurate, but reflective heat is often involved. The NWS sites their's so there is no reflective heat. Weather Underground primarily uses personal weather stations.
Same thing occurs at those bank temperatures.Always hotter than NWS.

(32,082 posts)After all this time they are using thermometers in the wrong locations? Which gives them temperatures this far off? Since you think this is their SOP then why would anyone believe any measurement they report?
LeftInTX
(25,556 posts)I have no idea what you mean by "they". Is NOAA fake news? Is NWS fake news?
Someone's personal weather station is reporting a certain temperature at a certain zipcode. During the winter, I prefer to have a personal weather station in my neighborhood because I live in a place where freeze is infrequent. A few miles can make a difference whether there is a freeze or not. Also I prefer a personal weather station's during rain. Once again a few miles can make a difference in the amount of rain.
The results are not "fake" because they are from personal weather stations. People have the right to own personal weather stations. The personal weather stations are automated. Nobody is faking anything.
Do you think people do not have the right to own personal weather stations???
I have no idea what you are complaining about.
Who is this "they" you are complaining about?????
former9thward
(32,082 posts)The "they" I am referring to is the link in the OP. It is "Weather Underground" It is still, as of this moment, reporting yesterday temp as 129.9. If WU wants to report obviously incorrect temperatures on their website, you are right, it is their business. But I have no idea why anyone would go to their website if they wanted correct information about the weather.

(9,974 posts)Got here yesterday, leave tomorrow. Very happy to be at 7,000+ elevation where it's "only" mid-90's.
I was in Vegas over the weekend. Left there early Monday morning before the worst temps started. I've been very lucky over the past week to be a few days ahead of the worst heat. Drove past the outskirts of Death Valley from Reno to Vegas last week so the 120 degrees had not hit yet. It still was hot, of course, but not to the extremes we are seeing this week.
Tomorrow I leave for Albuquerque for an overnight stay on my way home to TX. Nothing motivates you more to get your ass up and on the road really early than knowing how hot it's gonna be later in the day!

(51,129 posts)Tucsonians can drive to 10,000 feet easier than Valley dwellers can get to 7,000 feet elevations.
Looks like the Phoenix record falls again today.
