I didn't even know Lucasfilm was making this movie!

Talk about milking a franchise beyond dry...

Ron Howard takes helm of Han Solo 'Star Wars' film

NEW YORK (AP) - Ron Howard is taking command of the Han Solo "Star Wars" spinoff after the surprise departure of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Lucasfilm announced their replacement director Thursday, two days after Lord and Miller left the project over creative differences. Howard gives the reeling production a veteran hand in the wake of Lord and Miller's exit in the midst of shooting.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said filming will resume July 10. The untitled film is about three-quarters of the way through production. About a month of shooting is left, along with reshoots.

Oversaturation of a story and characters with prequels, spinoffs, compellations, origin stories has a way of killing interest for some.

One of the reasons I lost interest in all the comic book franchise movies out there. Just way too many of them to keep me focused.

I'd rather they spend all their creative efforts in the linear story line rather than give all their characters and their mothers origin stories.

Only thing about rebels is, by the time we get to RotJ in timeline (if yodas correct) Kanan and Ezra will both be dead. Will be interesting to see how that gets handled.

I could care less about the Solo film, but Obi-Wan standalone with Ewan Mc I would watch the hell out of

I also don't want to see how/why Chewie picked Han as his special buddy.

Which tells me that they will certainly show Han winning the Falcon from Lando and doing the Kessel Run, and we'll certainly see Chewie picking Han as his special buddy.

Too often, they're just a tired excuse to explain and visualize well-known canon as opposed to putting forward any sort of compelling story telling.

The Star Wars prequels are the most infamous example of this.

One very notable exception: The "Better Call Saul" series on AMC. They took a seemingly one-dimensional secondary comic relief character on Breaking Bad and turned into an exceptional and extremely well-done series in its own right. Even when introducing characters well-known to the Breaking Bad universe, it never overshadows the series itself.

I've only seen season 1 of Better Call Saul, but I love it.

Regarding the Han movie, I would hope that they'd say "we know about the Kessel Run and about winning the Falcon. Now's our chance to tell an interesting story that the entire world hasn't already heard 20 times over."

DU sometimes loves to thump on Howard, but he's a solid director, and I'm interested to see what he comes up with. Previously I didn't give a bantha's ass about this film, but now I'm intrigued.

that the story involves Han making the Kessel Run while fleeing both the Borg and the Cylons. (Apparently he double-crossed both in some kind of tomfoolery.) He leads both groups to the desert planet of Arrakis, where he has to duel their top warriors in a sand worm race.

David Hasselhof guest stars.

Recently I read that there's an actual quasi-canonical comic that has Indiana Jones find the crashed Millennium Falcon somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, complete with a skeleton that obviously belonged to Han.

Meanwhile Chewie is discovered to have been leaving countless big footprints in the forest...

Not sure what the movie will be about if those developments aren't included. I'll say this: I love what Disney has done so far but this seems like it's been a troubled production from day 1. It may end up being the tomato can of the new films.

If Disney ends the focus on the half dozen "main" characters and takes advantage of the universe-wide setting, they can get a lot of mileage out of it.

I'm not a fan of the various cartoon series, but even if the films restrict themselves to live action stuff, there are a ton of stories to tell.

I have issues with Ron Howard, though. He botched, I mean totally flucked up the ending of Inferno. They changed it so you could leave the theater and forget you ever saw it. If he had stuck with the book, we would be having conversations about overpopulation, the morality of forced sterilization, etc. Chickenshit.
