Conservative commentator George Will sometimes surprises when he makes statements unclouded by his very Conservative ideology and steeped in reality. His statement is the reasons why the GOP would be in trouble if they pass Trumpcare and Democrats run an unabashedly Progressive campaign on healthcare and middle-class values. In fact, he seemed resolved to single-payer Medicare for all.

Passing the ACA was close to impossible. Getting single payer in this country is a pipe dream. Sure, the odd state here and there will pass a version of single payer, but good luck waiting for anything nationwide.

(68,618 posts)pass single payer...better fight for what we have...we can use the ACA to introduce a public option...if we lose it, we get nothing...don't be duped by Wills who hate Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid...those programs will never come again if we can't save them.

(68,618 posts)rather stick pin in their eye...they want all such programs gone and sure as hell won't enact a new one...and don't have a super majority...and may not have one for years.

(68,618 posts)get rid of ACA for a reason...when will we ever have a super majority? That is what we need to enact any health care bill...and the house is still gerrymandered...we may get it back or we may not get it back. The chances of meaningful reform if the ACA goes down is minuscule. She does not advocate a single payer system or any system...she says Switzerland has a market based system which works well...there must be price controls...we could turn the ACA into such a system way easier than if we begin with nothing. If the ACA goes down,we get nothing for years...probably not in our lifetime...and this repeal takes down Medicaid as well.

(2,785 posts)The legislative filibuster is still in effect we would need to get 60 votes in the Senate to get single payer not going to happen. Repukes will try to repel the ACA with 50 votes plus the Vice President, but make no mistake about it when it's our turn we will need 60.

(1,007 posts)Rubs state they want a free market for health insurance, however, health care in the US is not free market...but has the cards stacked in their favor.
Restrictions to health care on supply side....with increased demand equals an over valued health care system.
Demsrule86
(68,618 posts)strong price controls which could be added to the ACA much easier than starting from scratch...we have no change of getting single payer in for years...and not at all if the ACA goes down.

(1,007 posts)I had a RN nurse friend who had been born in the Netherlands, educated as a RN there, married a US GI and came to the US. However, because she was not educated in a US nursing school, she had to repeat the whole RN program. And she stated several times...the nursing program she went through there was better than the program in the US.
This same system is for all health care providers in the US. In addition, the medical associations have not increased enrollment numbers for the last 60 years...so we have a baby boomer generation, with less number of medical staff.
If the US does not do something on the supply side, no US program will be viable in the long term.
