Wow is right. A Republican House committee is moving to strip Trump of authorization to use military force, which has been law since 9/11

Just like the senate voting 97-2 to increase sanctions on Russia - yet, not on tap to be voted on in the House.

Don't understand the long lead time till that bill would become law.

Might be some very interesting behind the scenes talk going on among Republicans.

I wonder if they are doing this because Trump is mentally ill? Or because he is a traitor?

...because of the flimsiness of using the 9-11 one as justification, and the fact that they're itching for even more military interventions and would like a pass.

Of course, any ambiguity has been routinely ignored by successive presidents; relying on congressional unwillingness to take responsibility and control of military ops; and falling back on tortured declarations of threats to national security.

I'd think republicans are looking to craft a new, replacement AUMF, and I'd think we might even see that replacement AUMF alongside of any actual repeal that makes it to the floor.

There's our challenge.

...which have to be "wound down."

At any rate, if it actually got further in the process, the exact number of days and so forth would probably be further negotiated. I look at that number more as a placeholder for something to be determined.

I think the ability to use AUMF to begin a new action should end immediately, and only the portion about ending current activities that began under AUMF would be allowed a wind down period.

so they'll simply declare victory and go home

and then move on to North Korea or Iran or somewhere else. Maybe Iceland or Lichtenstein have gotten too uppity and need to be put in their place
