(36,437 posts)But he was a lifelong civil servant, deeply knowledgeable about government and foreign policy, with a commitment to the improvement of the American experiment. I disagreed with Bush on many things, but your comparison of him to Trump is asinine beyond belief. Trump is a corrupt, ignorant piece of shit. Get a clue.

(1,459 posts)... but without the experience or the intellect.
He still had policies, positions, and the capability to act in a logically coherent way.
Trump is a being of pure Id filtered through a lens of perception. It doesn't matter what he does ... Win or lose...
The only thing that matters to him is how other perceive it.
There is a world of difference between those levels.

(16,672 posts)Papa Bush was nothing like Trump. While I didn't agree with him on much I wasn't afraid he was going to blow up the world either.

(13,081 posts)Designed and implemented by Jeb in order to make Dubya look good by comparison and rescue the Bush family name.
I'm kidding, of course, but it's really not so far fetched, is it?

(59,501 posts)Bush was a VP/Congressman/Ambassador to China/ head of the CIA/Head of the Republican party and a son of a CT Senator -- the complete opposite of Trump's complete lack of public service. Bush, while likely behind Iran/Contra, was known for his intelligence and his international knowledge.
Quayle was a young Senator, best known for denying he looked like Robert Redford ... he when not asked when he first ran against the wonderful Birch Bayh in 1980 when 10 incumbent liberal Senators all lost at the same time Reagan won. He was considered a lightweight in the Senate and his term as VP only reinforced that. There are LOTS of problems with Pence, a RW ideologue, but he is not considered to be a handsome lightweight. He did major damage as Governor of Indiana - accomplishing what he wanted to do.
